I downloaded lots of free books to my daughter's Kindle from Amazon, as I have a Nook simple touch.
I have been given a Kindle 3G/Wifi.
Because these were all free books, can I transfer them to my kindle (via Calibre)?

If you have registered the new Kindle to the same account as your daughters then you will be able to just re-download them from Amazon to the new Kindle. If not, and you just transfer them via Calibre, any that are not DRM-free (and just because they free books doesn't mean they don't have copy protection) you won't be able to open on the new Kindle. You can install some plug-ins for Calibre (see https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/) to get round this.0

I knew that some were not DRM free so I couldn't put them on my Nook but thought they would be ok to go straight onto another Kindle.
Thanks for the link to the plug in, shall have a look in the morning.0 -
You can different Kindle's registered to the same Amazon account and then you can share a book on these Kindle's (they just need to be downloaded for the relevant Kindle via Amazon), but if they are registered to different accounts then no, the DRM means you can't open them on a different Kindle.
However, if you learn how to de-DRM, you can then use Calibre to switch formats and you'd be able to read them on your Nook too.0 -
I am trying to log into my Amazon account on the kindle I was given, but it won't recognise either mine or my husbands accounts.
The previous owner has de registered on the kindle as it is asking me to register.
Do they have to de register the device online too before it can be used by another owner?0 -
No I'm sure de-registering the Kindle can be done either online or on the device, you don't need to do both and if the Kindle is asking you to register it, then that means it's been de-registered and isn't attached to any Amazon account.
So go ahead and do as it asks via the menu > settings > registration, simply tell it you already have an Amazon account and enter the email address and password to register it. You need to connect via wi-fi to do this so make sure the Kindle is set up to connect to your home wi-fi first.0
