People Per Hour

I run a small website design business and was just looking at PPH and can't believe the generic responses to job adverts on there.

This is why small businesses don't last in the UK as people from overseas will offer to do a job at a fraction of the price that doesn't make the job worthwhile.

Rant over.

Does anyone know places to advertise for business (not Yellow Pages as that just results in sales calls!)

  • It's all about differentiating yourself. People Per Hour is a big race to the bottom; people compete on price more than anything else. I won't go near it!

As for marketing yourself: you're in web design, so presumably you have a fantastic website that shows off your skills? If not, I'd start there. Try promoting it via a mix of blogging, social media, some SEO work and Google AdWords.

Offline, I'd be going to as many appropriate local meetups and networking events as I could. For instance, your signature says you also run an estate agency. So why not start there, pitching your design services to an industry sector with which you're familiar?

I do not have a website, but if I did want one, I probably would ask around people I know who have websites for recommendations. The last place I would look is the internet or a business directory to be honest.

Have you thought of asking your local office supplies shore to advertise for you. Most supply business cards and may have links with business logo designers. People who want a new logo might also want a website if they are just starting up or wanting to promote their business on the internet for the first time.

I agree with the comment regarding the networking events. I assume that you are based in Essex, stevie1980?

If you look on either Meet Up or Eventbrite, they tend to advertise events on there. There is also Office Drinks (for a small charge) and possibly events run by Menta/Develop Anglia?

I am based in Suffolk so I can only assume that the events organised here may have their counterparts organised in Essex.

I can give you some good pointers to Networking Events too.
