Distance Selling Regs Rewards Stupidity / Lazyness

HIya
I sell products on Amazon aswell as other places and quite often, consumers buy from me.
As time goes on, it really amazes me how stupid and lazy some people are before making that purchase.
I feel the Distance selling regs have given the consumer the right to purchase on a whim knowing they will get all their money back leaving us sellers with a used / opened product that can no longer be sold as new.
I sell electronics like printers for example.
I get people saying "I did not realise it only had one tray" or "it's bigger than I though"
Why does the regulations allow lazy people to return products when all the information they complain about is clear on spec sheets and descriptions of the product. All the info is there, they have just refused to read it.
They then open the box, use it, return it and then I have a product that will make me a loss.
How is this fair?
I understand if they bought a printer for Photo use and the print quality is not up to scratch, that can't be described in a spec sheet even though it is up for debate whether the print is actually good enough or not, but at least it is understandable.
Am I missing something as a seller, or do consumers have us by the short and curlys?
Thanks
Paul

They are no longer called Distance Selling Regulations as they changed earlier this year to Consumer Rights Act 2015, full name:-
The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 - or just the Consumer Contracts Regulations (used to be called the Distance (or Doorstep) Selling Regulations).
And as such you can now make deductions to reflect the reduced value of the item under certain conditions.
.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Yeah sorry, I knew that about the name change :-)
Regarding the deductions, for example, I have literally just had a return request.
Customer bought a Printer, here is the title.
1 of HP CF286A LaserJet Pro 400 M425dn MFP Mono Printer + Extra Compatible CF280X XL Toner (6,900 Pages)
He wants to return it because he wanted a colour printer and did not realise this was only black and white (mono)
He has opened but not used.
Now due to his lack of reading the title and description, he is under our stupid law, able to return this and nothing I can do.
However, I can no longer sell as new.
What are my rights regarding reducing the refund to account for my loss of earnings selling as open boxed?
Many thanks

Short answer is you can't legally.
The buyer hasn't gone beyond what is reasonable as per assessing if it was suitable for their needs ie they just opened the box and realised it was not what they required. If they had printed say 10 plus pages before rejecting it IMHO you'd be able to reduce the refund.
You need to build this CCR cost into your pricing to be honest0 -
Yeah, just spoken to CAB and they have explained.
I really do think that a well described product that has been opened should be allowed to have the refund reduced, but hey, what do I know.
Regarding building the cost in, you are probably right, however, the return rate is pretty low, it's just very, VERY annoying.
Thanks for all your help
