Hello
Not sure if this is the right place on the forum for this but if anyone can help it would be appreciated. Over the last month, I have noticed that when I make a coffee, or tea there is an odd taste as it cools down. Ive only just worked out that it is when its cooling down but over the last month Ive
Replaced the kettle
Throroghly cleaned and scrubbed the dishwasher
Ensured the tap is run for a few minutes before filling the kettle
Rinsing the kettle before use.
Today Ive run a glass of water from the tap and left it to stand -tastes normal after half an hour
Ive then poured some of the kettle boiled water into a a cup and left it to cool - tasted vile after ten minutes.
We are in the area of Lancashire where we needed to boil the water - this has now been lifted.
The United Utilites website suggests running the tap first - done. Ensuring dishwasher is rinsing properly - done.
We have lived in this house for 8 years and never had a problem but seeing as the water tastes okay when it is drawn from the tap I am puzzled as to what it could be

Boil a cup of water in the microwave - same problem?0

I'll go give that a try0

Probably chlorine. When you leave the water to stand on the side, some of it evaporates off hence the improvement in taste. Boiling it can cause any residual chlorine to react with the metals or plastics (I can't remember which) in the kettle.
Always change the water in your kettle when you use it.

Thanks for your replies. I think the one from the microwave tastes okay but hubby isnt too sure. I'l going to try another one and also one in a saucepan. Glad to be getting to the bottom of this as Ive thrown away a perfectly good kettle, my favourite cup and was about to dismantle the dishwasher0

The microwaved water is now cold and has a slight taste to it - not as strong as before.but definatley there. ve looked on the website and they have a list of 'tastes'...I cant deternine whether it tastes chlorine, earthy, musty or metallic0

It sounds a bit much, but you might need to get your husband to set you up with a "blind" taste test of the kettle, vs pan, vs microwave.
If you can reliably identify the kettle one, that would be weird (as you have apparently already changed your kettle).0 -
Do your neighbours experence similar problem with water taste? If so, this could point towards the utility company if they are on the same mains water supply.
You could try a comparison test with a cheap bottle of supermarket water.
I think drinking water test strips are available on the internet, perhaps these may give you a clue?0 -
Good idea, will try that. Lol I am on the second kettle in two months.0
