Mortgage PPI

Hi I wondered if anyone can give me some advice please. I had a mortgage started in 1992 and ended in 2003. We were told we had to take payment protection out on the mortgage loan to get the mortage. While I understand this was normal in the 1990's, I found this strange as I was employed in a large company and had been for a number of years and my husband was at the time unemplyed. They sold it to us on the grounds of if we were ill or lost our jobs the mortgage would get paid. I would have been paid sick pay by my company and my husband was unemplyed so would not have lost his job as he did not have one.We paid this PPI for the entire motgage until we sold the house in 2003. I have the bank details, the mortgage number and some statements. The mortgage was with National and Provincial, taken over by Abbey and now Santander. We also had a second mortage with Abbey from 1999 antil around 6 years ago, where Abbey insisted we had their buildings and contents insurance to get the mortgage. We later found out that we did not have to take insurance from them. I also had a M&S store card around the time (1994) and paid protection on this and had a secure job that would have paid me sick pay. I think these may have been mis-sold for the reasons stated above and realise that it is over the 6 year end limit, so not sure if I have a claim. If anyone can advise me I would be very grateful. Thank you

We were told we had to take payment protection out on the mortgage loan to get the mortage.
That is not actually as mis-sale reason as long as it was actually the case. Quite a lot of 90s deals required it.
However, even if they didnt and you were lied to, its an impossible one to prove.
All the other reasons you give are reasons to have MPPI. Not reasons for missale. Give it a go by all means. You may get lucky and there may be another failure you are not aware of. Here is an example FOS decision (real case but different lender) on a mandatory insurance:

However, to counter the two above rejections, here is a rarer success on a so called mandatory complaint

I say rarer as there are 307 rejections to 54 upholds on ombudsman decisions when searching for the word mandatory. Whilst most rejections were mortgage related it was loans that were mostly upheld and finding a mortgage uphold on that criteria was difficult.
The response from the FOS on that case is unusual too. As they normally reject 6 months full pay, 6 months half pay as a reason on MPPI. Whereas on short term debt, its usually a strong reason that leads to success on a complaint.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I'am always having phones calls about my mortgage PPI, I was just thinking of trying to do it myself but I'am confused ! I took my mortgage out with Abbey and was told that I had to have payment proctection insurance before I could have my mortgage, so I souced it else where as was cheaper, so is it the Abbey/Santander I write to or who I have insurance with ?0

You have no-one to complain to. Santander are only responsible for sales of their own products. You didnt buy through them so you cant complain to them.
When you DIY, you reduce your consumer protection as you have made the decision to buy. It was not sold to you.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
