Advice needed please re bad experience with American Airlines thank you :)

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me!
We flew with american airlines to florida with a connecting flight at jfk a couple of weeks ago. On arriving at the airport we were told they had not booked us onto the connecting flight so we had to fly to jfk with our children and sort the mess out there. This took 3 hours and our children (aged 7, 9 and 12) were separated from us on the flight due to the mix up (we had prebooked seats together).
On the return we were delayed by 7 hours and we're put up in a hotel overnight due to mechanical failure. This flight was orlando to Chicago. The delay meant we would miss our connecting flight. We travelled the next day when I actually should have been back at work. The service on the internal flight was awful, they didn't know who should sit where, there were people on the flight that shouldn't have been on there and children again separated from their parents. We also encountered some really rude staff.
On return to the uk I made a complaint, simply hoping for an apology. They have sent us $200 vouchers each that can only be used on aa flights. Now, whilst I appreciate this is a generous amount I am unable to use these vouchers and would like to request this compensation in a different way (basically one I can use!).
I must stress I am not in this to make money from the delay, I would have been more than happy with an apology and 10% of what they have given us, but as we're unable to use the vouchers and still haven't had an apology I feel a little cheated! The dream holiday we had booked started and ended in my children crying.
I hope someone can tell me if I have any hope in changing these vouchers, even for a lesser amount or if I may as well give up now!!!
Thank you

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me!
Thank you
Ask on Flyertalk in the AA forum
Possibly fill int the gaps as to who did not book you onto the connecting flight?
Did you book direct with the Airline ?
Vouchers can be sold on ebay or on FT or to me :cool:0 -
I stopped flying with Aa quite some time ago due to poor service - and I am quite surprised you got such a high amount of vouchers... the most I got was $20 to spend on-board and that was for making me 2hrs late for a connecting flight.
Are you aware that you can spend the vouchers through Aa on code share flights on partner airlines. This would mean that you can get to most of Europe from London, Manchester and Edinburgh? I know that isn't exactly what you are wanting but might be handy.
You can always reject the vouchers - but you would need to send them back and there is no guarantee of a cash payout. If you keep the vouchers AA will consider your complaint resolved.0 -
$800 compensation is pretty good as AA aren't obligated to give you anything as they did get you there and back.
They are probably OneWorld vouchers so can be used on BA (and if not lots of European flights codeshare so have an AA flight number so you could use them on those)
I seriously doubt you'll get cash from AA so it might be worth seeing if the vouchers could be used for something more useful to you like a European short break.
FWIW I got 5000 miles from AA for a 3 hour delay last week-I'd have preferred a $200 voucher for sure
