Hard-wearing bed linen

Options
OSers, speak to me of bed linen that will stand up to serious abuse and not turn yellow after a few months.

So far all our linens have been coloured (blue, burgundy etc), but after a while they start to discolour, especially the top of the duvet covers and the pillow cases. JLewis or BnM, they all start to look a bit student bedsit after a while.

I expect washing at 50 doesn't help, not hot enough to shift the grime, but any higher and the colour fades. Husband wears hair product and does a lot of car mechanics, I get night sweats, and the dog loves to sneak onto freshly made beds.

I'm wondering if buying all white is the way to go, so I can bleach the fug out of it occasionally. Any advice?

I wash all my linen at 95C. All the colours are brilliant.
  • None at all! And we both wash regularly before anyone asks :)

jk0, where did you get your linens from? The JL stuff faded dreadfully when I put it in at that temp.
  • Tkmaxx have some fantastic bed linen in white. 800 - 1000 thread count...wash at 95..pillowslips normally have some marks, but they come out just fine.
  • I'd actually try one of the oxygen based bleaching agents first--the colour safe one should do it. You may need to soak the first couple of times and after that just add a scoop every time you do laundry. Hair products are particularly bad for this.

Primark bedding and towels really do wash well and the colours stay, even when I wash at 60 and tumble dry.

My Ikea bedding however seems to be getting black spots...mould, maybe?!

Mostly inherited or bought from 2nd hand sources.
  • I've got a similar issue. I've got some cream coloured linen but recently I've noticed the pillow cases and sheet are turning yellow. I always wash at 30C but do I need to turn it up for these?

    GRIME !!!!!!!!!!

Have a shower/bath before (every) bedtime rather than errrrr.....once a year? GTIME !!!!!!! Wash bedding AT LEAST once a week as the thought of bedding going from 'In need of a freshen up' to 'grimmy' is just too revolting to even think about.

As for 'men wearing hair products' I've heard this sort of thing does happen, metrosexual and all that (hint- bath/shower every night)...... As for a mechanic 'wearing hair products' eeeeek! What next..... make-up tips!!

To sum up ..... lots of frequent washing! :j
