Laptop will not connect to wifi since latest 8.1 update - "Limited" error m

My Lenovo yoga 2 laptop ran an auto update today of windows 8.1 and promptly stopped connecting to my home wifi. The display shows 5 bars of signal but a "cross" denotes no connectivity to my broadband router and it has the word Limited underneath the connection name. I cannot connect it to the internet.

Running the trouble shooter reports a connectivity issue with the router. In fact the router has not been moved or changed or reset at all recently and it currently works fine with both my home desktops (which use windows 7) and my tablet which uses Android. It worked with my laptop until the auto update to win 8.1 this afternoon.

I have tried restarting the laptop. No luck. Resetting the broadband modem. No luck. Reinstalling the network driver on the laptop. No luck. Run the troubleshooter diagnostic which gives the following error message "The connection between your access point, router or cable modem and the Internet is broken".

Well the modem clearly connects to the Internet OK as I am using it with my desktop to send this message. It must be some wifi setting on my laptop which 8.1 has screwed up so it cannot communicate with the modem. Any suggestions?

Can you run a restore to the point in time just before the updates. If that clears the connectivity issue, install updates manually one by one until you find the culprit. Otherwise click on network connections and look at the network map, you might find the laptop has been changed into a public network.

It might also be worth getting the laptop to "forget" the network and reconnecting.

Restore points do not seem to work at present on 8.1. I have removed the latest updates from yesterday but it still does not work.

How can I see if it thinks it is on a public network? Remember 8.1 does not have same os as win 7 and takes some navigating around. I am not sure how to look at the network connections map? I cannot find it and suspect it no longer exists in 8.1.

I disabled and reenabled the Network adaptor and that did not work. How do I make the laptop forget the network is there another way?

The error message says connection from the access point via the modem or router to the Internet is broken. The cable modem (Virgin superhub) has not been changed for some time and all other devices connect to it OK including via wifi. Only the 8.1 laptop does not since yesterday. So I am thinking it is some setting on the laptop that has changed so it can no longer create an ip address via the modem?

Update: Windows 8 doesn't include a basic map of your system on the network nor is there a See full map link.
