Experian says card 'invalid'?

Hi.

This might sound like a ridiculous post so I apologise in advance but...

I have spent the last hour trying to access my credit score online via Experian's free trial but for whatever reason their site keeps insisting that my debit card number is invalid. I have checked, double checked and triple checked... I am typing in the correct number that is on the front of my card but they aren't accepting it and my card most definitely isn't invalid.

The available card options on Experian are Visa; Mastercard; Maestro/ Switch... Usually when I use my debit card to pay online there is always a Visa Debit option, so I am wondering if this is the problem and Experian only accept Visa credit cards?

Any suggestions/knowledge would be welcomed. Thanks!

  • Experian are starting to clamp down on fraudulent applications....at last!
It used to be easy for someone to get your details with a simple credit card from them and their CreditExpert company and they had "many fraudulent applications".
You may have entered an incorrect "security code" from the card or the card has maybe been used incorrectly without this and is now "considered potential fraudulent application" through re-use.
Try going through TopCashBack (get cashback) and register for a report then cancel after your full details have been obtained? Or try Equifax (£8.58 cashback)?

According to the website it simply asks for 'visa' and doesn't specify credit or debit card. I would suggest that you try to call Experian and see if they can help you over the phone. You could also get the other 2 files for the time being (this will ultimately give you the best overview of your score).

You should be able access them both for free by logging onto www.noddle.co.uk for the Call Credit report and www.clearscore.com for the Equifax report.

Hope that helps you get started.

    Hi Oscarbuster

This doesn't seem like a ridiculous post at all, and I am sorry that you have had difficulty registering.

We accept the following cards for the CreditExpert service

    •Credit cards - Visa & Mastercard
    •Debit Cards - Maestro/Switch and Visa Debit
•Visa Electron (you will need to select Visa as the card type)

If your card is still not being accepted please give us a call on 0800 013 88 88 or 0344 481 080 so that we can help you with this.

    Kind regards

  • Just as an aside (I'm over it now) the last time I applied for my Experian statutory report I didn't get it. There appears to be a bit of a problem with their website. I applied online and it gave me the message that there was a problem with my payment and to ring. I rang and was told nothing had gone through and there was nothing they could do to correct it. Fair enough, I didn't get the report but my £2 was taken a few days later.

Annoying but not worth following up (I thought). But I do wonder how many £2's are 'taken' in this way .... it all adds up for a multi national.

I understand that you didn't want to follow this up but if you've applied and paid for a Experian Credit Report and didn't receive it I want to personally investigate why this happened and look at putting this right.

Please email me your details (full name/date of birth/full address including postal code) I'll gladly assist you further.

Hi. I wish you had dealt with my many problems with Experian / CreditExpert as you seem to be easier to contact than Experian themselves.
Within 10 minutes of a 3rd party registering my credit card with Experian the information given out by them allowed someone to empty my bank accounts. I know Experian had "many fraudulent applications" but that statement didn't help me and Experian has dismissed my complaints since.
I just hope Experian's security improves and nobody else suffers the same fate!
