Greek holiday money

I'm going to Greece next week. Should I take all my spending money in cash up front? Or can I rely on using my travelex (or halifax clarity) card for withdrawing cash and paying for things? Just concerned about the current economic state out there.

  • I am in Corfu right now and everything is fine. Cash machines are normal, as are the shops. I would, however, bring some cash just to be safe.

Enjoy your trip - the weather is amazing here... So warm I have had to retreat to the Account (why I am on Mse!)
  • Im off to Corfu on the 2nd October and hoping the weather is good then!!
  • Well it has been about 32 today in roda with no wind. I hope it lasts for you!
  • We went to Roda a few weeks back and although we did take quite a bit in cash we were able to get money from the cash machines too.

You wouldn't have even known there was a problem with the economy, everything was open and running as normal.

Back from mainland Greece at end of August - no problems at all and Greeks keen for us to spread the message back in UK. We did take extra cash as advised but brought most of it back with us.

We came back on Sunday from a week on Santorini and, as others have said, you wouldn't know there was a crisis in Greece. Everything was absolutely fine. We used our bank cards to pay for most things, except one restaurant who didn't accept cards for anything under 20euro (he said that the banks charged him 6% for small amounts) so we paid him in cash for our drinks and snack.
  • Ok great stuff. I'll still take a bit more cash than normal, but not the entire trip's worth. I think the weather's turning cool for me, gutted.
  • Cool weather in Greece is far from bad... so much to do and see... and so much Mythos to drink. If you are in Corfu - try Corfu Beer... I particularly enjoy the Red.
