Whatever I start to type, i get a popup saying character is not recognised??

My key is formatted as so- (1's are different numbers!)

11111-oem-11111111-11111

Should I be using something else? laptop came pre installed with w7, no startup disc.

Also- is lack of activation also stopping me access the 'windows.old' folder contents?

hard disc is about half full- same as before the retro grade, so I guess old files photos etc are hidden away somewhere..?

    That's not a product key:

    11111-oem-11111111-11111

    this is a product key:

    VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

    This.

I'm not sure what you've got there. Even if it's an OEM version, you should have the normal product key format.

I suspect he's referring to what is shown in the System Info page (Winkey+Pause). For instance, on my work laptop (created from a VLK image) the Product ID shows as 11111-111-111111-11111, where 1 is various numbers between 0 and 9.

In OEM systems I think the -111- shows as -OEM- ??

Interestingly (?) on my Acer Aspire 5741Z (I don't remember reinstalling the O/S) it is 11111-OEM-111111-11111

This means whoever sold you the laptop installed an OEM version.

OK, where would I found this wondruous key? No paperwork came with it )accept shop receipt), and any labels on bottom of laptop have worn off..

Main concern was that NO characters were being accepted- number or letters?

What have you used to re-installed W7 and what version of W7 is it: basic, home, pro, ultimate or enterprise ?
