i need to install a new tv aerial to receive freeveiw and normal tv in my conservatory. ive got poor reception due to the local tip becoming a mountain and blocking the signal.

what sort can someone recommend? ive had a look on argos and maplins but am just confussed now:confused: .

i think i would like to get it from maplins as i think i can get a student discount:rotfl: .

i got the freeview box hoping to use with an indoor booster aerial and improve the picture quality but it didn't work.

  • I have a similar problem and we've been advised to get the aerial on the roof changed to a wideband aerial and then use a booster inside. Haven't looked into it any more than that unfortunately so can't be of any more use at the mo.

You could always call an aerial installation company for a quote, even if its too expensive it'd give you an idea of what you need to do.

Type your postcode in here and it'll tell you the aerial you need and whether you need an amplifier: http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?

Remember to buy GOOD QUALITY coax cable and plugs, it really does make a difference, especially if the cable run is more than a few metres.

Edit: Televes DAT75 aerials are very good!

We had two amplifier indoor aerials in front of house until last week we just about got freeview but analogue was poor, We live on a hill and you can see the transmitter on the next hill about a mile away as crow flys. We finally got rid of them as we needed a new aerial due to a builder knocked our old one and bodging it up but didnt tell us. But we did need a feed in each bedroom so we paid to get it fitted. We got two prices from a aerial fitters, it was about £70-£80 for new aerial and one room and £30-£40 per room after that. We have four rooms done, living room and 3 bedrooms and 2 aerials and they split them. He did include splitters and he said he used good quality cable and also tidied up the holes where cable came into house.

Can I please ask how you had your cable box mounted? I just had mine done last week & the guy put the cable through the windows sill & the aerial box is surface mounted. I am really annoyed as it looks messy! I told him why did he do that & he said he would double the cost to flush mount the aerial boxes & put the cable through the brick work!

How old are your fly leads? I had poor reception when switching to freeview but on advice from someone on the Techie board renewed my fly leads (the ones that connect the equipment to the aerial) and problem was solved.

If your signal is blocked as you say, no aerial ever made will work, unless you get the aerial up high enough, a TV signal cannot pass through solid matter.
  • Hi,

I agree with barrymung, the Televes DAT75 Aerials are exceptional and would have been my next step if my current solution didn’t work.

Like Inactive says, use a longer mast or maybe even relocate it, I would use PF100 coax and fit an amplifier AS CLOSE to the aerial as possible, you really need to boost the signal before it starts going through the house collecting interference. Mine is about 9 inches away from the aerial at the top of the aerial mast, it only takes about a 3dB gain to double the signal, on the other hand a 3 dB drop will halve the signal.

So get yourself a masthead amplifier fitted, use good quality coax, make sure it isn’t kinked or crushed during the install and make sure all your connectors are in good condition.
