2011 1.2 Polo Misfire Issues

Hi guys,
New here so sorry if in wrong section!

I have owned a 2011 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 60ps Match for around 2 months now, bought at 51,000 and now at 57,000 due to commuting etc.

A few weeks ago the car started vibrating more heavily than usual, I took this on the chin and hoped the issue would go away, a few weeks on and the heavy vibrating still persists when idle, however i'm not sure if these issues are related.

The other day I was driving to a meeting when the EPC light, airbag and tyre pressure light came on, the engine suddenly cut off a cylinder which has later transpired as a misfire, the car still ran however albeit with very little power.
I turned the engine off, and the problem had gone for another 5 mins or so until it came back again.

I took it to a garage the next day, diagnostics show that cylinder 2 had been misfiring but that everything was fine and after a full check up, the faults cleared and a couple of coil replacements I was on my way. I did a 250 mile motorway journey and about 20 miles commuting in heavy traffic following that, only for the problem to come back again.

I took it to a garage again, cylinder 2 misfiring, fault codes cleared and the garage took it for a 15 mile run with no issues, I took the car back and continued driving as normal, the problem didn't return until later that evening.

I'm confused? The garage have said the engine is fine, they did a thorough check of it too to ensure that nothing was untoward and the bloke at the garage was left baffled at the problem.

Any one else had a problem or know what could be causing this? As all it seems to take is for the fault to be cleared and the car runs on all three cylinders like normal, starts like normal, and it's only when i've been driving for a while that it messes up?

Any help would be amazing!
Cheers!

  • Take it to another garage for a second opinion. When was the car serviced and what did it include? Were the spark plugs ever changed?

Switch the spark plug and coild park from cylinder 2 with another cylinder and then see if the misfire moves to another cylinder. Or get a test light, attach it to earth, pull #2 pack out test its strength.

If the misfire doesn't move you want to be looking at that cylinder, so a compression test followed by a leak down test.

One of those scenarios where it could be something cheap and simple or something severe and expensive

All three spark plugs have been changed when the problem occurred, this morning I rang the guy who did it and he said that there was definitely something wrong with the coils on cylinder 2, so have got it in for a coil pack change today. We'll see if it fixes it or not, as I've now read that VW's are notorious for having these issues.
