I am getting an advertisement on the top line of my inbox; started seeing it a few weeks ago. Is there a way to get rid of this as it's very annoying. I checked the advertising settings, and I seem to be opted out of the personal advertising. Any help would be much appreciated.

Use ad blocking software; use a proper email client; or pay £29.99 a year to remove ads.0

To elaborate on the above...Use ad blocking software...
Have a look at AdBlock Plus:

Thunderbird is an email client -- a program on your PC that you can use to check your email instead of logging in via your web browser. You won't see any adverts in Thunderbird (unless they are in the contents of an email).

Thank you guys for your suggestion. I have now installed Thunderbird and seems to be working. Been playing with it to familiarise myself with its functionalities and I must say, I'm very impressed. But there is 1 thing I came across which I don't like, and I'm wondering if it's because of its inherent design or me not configuring it correctly.
When I installed it I chose not to store the email password as I prefer to key it in when I open Thunderbird. However, when I open it, it seems to load my linked email inbox and then asks me for the P/W. To make matters worse, I can cancel out of the window without keying in the P/W. It allows me to open emails but not to send or reply until I key in the P/W.
Is this the way it's supposed to work or is there anything I should do to stop it from loading before I key in the P/WBefore doing something... do nothing0 -

That's how it's supposed to work. You are getting access to old emails which have been saved on your device. When you enter your password, it will synchronise and give you new emails and the ability to send and receive email.Total Debt Left: £14,843 / £23,954

Thank you for confirming that. Without sounding too paranoid about security, that sounds like a security breach. It gives anyone who gets hold of my laptop complete access to all my emails. I presume the one way round this issue is to delete the mail account before closing thunderbird and having to create and sync again next time I open it. Or is there another option? Before doing something... do nothing0 -
if you are that paranoid, just put a password on your laptop so you have to enter it each time you open the laptop0

That's the way it's suppose to work. Your email is stored locally and you don't need a password to access it.
There's some options listed here that may offer what you want.
It boils down to not storing copies of your email locally: Tools > Account Settings >YOUR ACCOUNT > Synchronisation and Storage > REMOVE tick from Keep messages for this account on this computer.
Or encrypting the directory where your Thunderbird profile is stored.0 -

If not, then anyone who took your laptop and opened the browser would also be able to access all of your emails.0
