Browser problem, please help

Options
Hello
I seem to have a virus and/or a problem with my browser.
Firefox keeps crashing - often as soon as I open it - and even when it doesn't, I can rarely get to any websites. (There isn't a problem with the wifi itself, as I can connect fine on my laptop, which I'm using for this.)
I have run full antivirus scans with Avast and that's not fixed it.
I wanted to try uninstalling and reinstalling firefox. Unfortunately, when I had some previous problems with constant popups (now resolved) I uninstalled IE. So, if I uninstall firefox, I've no browser to get online and reinstall it.
I'm using XP, and the computer is working reasonably normally offline.
Please, any ideas?

    Not sure if this helps???

Firefox has been crashing a few times a week on me, the message pops up OOPS Sorry. So it might actually be a Firefox problem. Are you using the latest version? Its seems to be that one causing problems. But no way is it as bad as you mention.

    Hi

You could consider a bridging browser like...

    Opera
    http://www.opera.com/computer?gclid=CMqVtYjP88cCFRKeGwodJlwNyg

    Safari
    http://www.apple.com/safari/

    Chrome
    https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/

then try and clean out Firefox and re-install.

Yes you are using an unsupported operating system that is a severe security risk, change to a supported OS.

Can you uninstall IE from XP? Anyway getting that going or another browser as suggested is the short term way to get on to the internet so you can then go for an older Firefox version or whatever else may be needed. If you suspected a virus and your av came up clean then worth running malwarebytes also however the post about unsupported systems makes a good point.
  • Hi,

you could download FF to your lappy, then transfer to usb stick and to your pc.

    disable add-ons

    or

    download, uninstall, reinstall

    ie should still work
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
  • again disable add-ons

Don't bother disabling add-ons -- just create a new profile that doesn't have the add-ons installed.

Open a command prompt and type "firefox -p", press enter, then create a new profile and see if the issue still occurs.

You can't (easily) remove IE from XP. If you go to Start/Run and type "iexplore.exe" and hit enter, Internet Explorer will start if it's still there.

What's a bridging browser? Is that a technical term, or do you just mean that you have a spare or secondary browser to use instead of the main one?
  • Thank you all for the suggestions.

It now seems my problem is NOT Firefox but something else.

I found IE as you suggested esuhl (even tho I thought I*d uninstalled it and found no trace when I looked)
And even using that, I*m still having great problems getting to any websites. So the problem is not with the browser.

My computer tells me I*m connected and that my wireless LAN card is working correctly. But now neither browser is managing to open any webpages.

I have absolutely NO idea what to do now: please help
(But please bear in mind I can*t do anything that requires getting online with the computer that has the problem)

PS Sorry about dodgy typing; AZERTY keyboard keeps tripping me up
