whats the difference re Office?

Options
when Installing M-soft office and word you get asked to tick one;

office open XML formats
or
open documents formats
What the difference and which one should I tick
In the past I have just ticked either but I thought it is time I knew what they are

It is just for home use

Thanks

Well, that's disposed of the Government's initiative, then!

No it isn't. It's the actual UK Government adopted standard which is being adopted by many Governments to break MS proprietary lock in.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/open-standards-for-government/sharing-or-collaborating-with-government-documents

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/open-document-format-odf-guidance-for-uk-government/avoid-macros-in-documents

Macros offer features that make them both convenient and powerful, but they also have problems with interoperability and security. Macros that work on one version of software or platform won’t necessarily function on another. They can also allow viruses to infect your computer and distribute themselves using an application’s own programming language. Even when a file comes from a known and trusted person or organisation it may already be infected without their knowledge.
For these reasons the UK government forbids the use of macros in publicly shared documents and advises against their use in general.

Open XML is a mess, this is quite deliberate by MS to hold on to people using MS office, avoid.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

In a sense it doesn't matter which you choose initially, because you can easily change the default later to whatever you like.

The choice is only relevant if you wish to send documents to someone else, of course. Sending documents in Rich Text Format (RTF) means that most people can read them (but avoid this format if your document contains graphics or pictures, which cause the size to balloon). .DOCX format usually gives a smaller file size than does .DOC.

    Take your pick!
