Thanks for that input Dan - Dan. But I think we're wise enough to know our own financial situation!

You might not like it but I agree with DanDan, if you need OD of £1000 and youve gone over that it doesnt look like you can manage your finances, how do you intend to pay a mortgage every month.
  • Two maxed out cards and an overdraft? Not good. Resembles me as an immature 18 year old

I would suggest ensuring the payments for all three are made before their statement due date and calling up to see if the charge can be waived. Hopefully it won't be reported then

Halifax may or may not check after the offer is made. I suspect it's down to how quickly you complete after the offer is made but if they see three missed payments in a month, they'll pull the offer

    Hi all,

Thanks again for your replies. To be honest it became clear yesterday when I looked more into his banking that he hadn't been honest with me at all. Alone financially I'm in a great position for this mortgage it's doable even with all the bills etc with just my wage with about half left over.

In terms of how we sort the finances every month he first and foremost pays to me his share of the rent and bills etc then he has all the rest of his money left over to make his debt payments and do whatever else.

It's his bad management ( which when we were talking about it he was telling me it was getting paid off apart from the last month or so as we had a car and cat emergency!)

It's become clear that he wasn't honest about getting some late payment and over the agreed limit charges. I think he was too embarrassed.

I've now paid money into all three of them and a bit extra. So stupid all such small amounts - just because he didn't check! That's all he had to do.

I went onto his noodle and it all seems to say OK there and the one when he went over it in May didn't seem to show up on there.

However the one that is causing me the most concern is his Barclaycard. I see that this went overdrawn on the 8th or 9th but it was to do with a charge and then interest being applied to it that took it over. I can't call them and as he's away he'd have to wait a week so I'm hoping there's a message system for which I'm going to apologise for the initial issue that made him go over and get a charge but I can't see where that is anywhere? I do think it may have been the interest though and point out that for this month going over was to do with the interest and charges. I'll also be honest with them and say now I've paid that more to act a buffer would they mind taking the late payment off as it would really mess things up for us this month?
    A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."
  • He hasn't 'gone into overdraft' - he's gone OVER the overdraft, which, as others have said, doesn't look good.

You may be lucky and 'get away with it', but you'll then be stuck with a house and a partner who is, as you've found out, not as good as you with money.

Is the mortgage do-able on your own?
