Hi

my son laptop is nearly 5 years old and it shuts down with out warning at 47% battery level

Am I correct in thinking the battery needs replacing?

Is there much difference between a 5200mah and a 5600mah battery?

Thank you

Have you tried disabling low power shutdown to see how long it really lasts?

5200 and 5600 are really not much difference in terms of powering a laptop.

If your looking at cheap batteries on eBay, I would reconsider, they rarely have the capacity they claim and to save costs they often don't have proper safety circuits to stop the lithium battery over charging.

    Certainly sounds like it.

The difference is 400mAh! :-P So a 5200mAh battery holds about 93% of the charge that a 5600mAh battery will.

It's always hard to find replacement laptop batteries. Either the originals are hard to get or insanely expensive, or there are just so many fakes that it's hard to know what you're buying.

I've never tried myself, but laptop batteries are made from 18650 cells. Maybe you could try dismantling the battery and just replace the cells...?

Wouldn't recommend this - I've stripped a couple of lappy batteries to re-use the 18650's in my vaping devices (e-cigs) and it's not practical to replace the individual batteries, it was a job enough to just take them all out without damaging them, they tend to be very well stuck in in the lappy battery pack casing :(

You don't say which OS you have installed but generally you should have a battery icon in the system tray (bottom-right of screen). Right-click the icon and select Power Options from the menu.

Select the power plan you are currently on and from the Advanced Power Settings you can change what the computer does at selected charge levels.

Batterys on laptops are only expected to last 2 years. More is a bonus.

People who 90% of the time have the laptop plugged in reduce the battery life. It need discharge cycles.

I tend to get my replacement batterys form amazon.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LENOGE-Replacement-Laptop-Battery-A32-K53/dp/B00SMJPL5K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1442068085&sr=8-2&keywords=battery+for+asus+a53e

However if you fully charge the fully discharge (power setting to never switch off and let the laptop shut itself off) twice then you should retrain the battery to its current capacity and it should not shut down at 4x%.

I use bettery info view to see how much the battery has depleted from original capaciry. This can help decide whether retraining or a new battery is the best option http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html
  • It seems to me, admittedly on scant info, that the battery's critical power level has somehow been changed to 47% from its normal 3% - 5% default value. The laptop shouldn't switch off at 47% no matter how old the battery might be. As the battery ages, however, it will reach the set critical level faster.
