First time selling a car, insurance question
I've ordered a new car which should be arriving this month, registration date is the 15th September so I can't do anything with it yet as it's not showing up anywhere when I type it in.
I have my current car which I'd like to sell. I'm hoping to get a specific date from the new car company when it will be delivered so that I can schedule transfer the insurance over, which then gives me an insurance certificate that the new car company needs before they can deliver, and it doesn't leave me without a driveable car.
However I've never sold a car before so I'm confused as to how insurance will work on the car I'm selling. I could advertise it now and have people come look at it but say I can't sell it until XX date, that would give them time to arrange their own insurance. But would people be happy with that? Is there another way around it?

Is the car being delivered to your house or your local dealership? Can they not arrange 7 days free insurance for you?0

It's being delivered to my house. What good would 7 days insurance do, what if I can't sell my other car in 7 days? Best Wins:

Whenever you sell the car, the buyer would have to sort their own insurance out as they won't be covered by yours anyway. You are talking about transferring your insurance from your current car to your new car. When you do that your old car won't be insured, but if you park it in a driveway or somewhere secure, then it's no issue?
"You must have motor insurance for your vehicle if you use it on roads and in public places. You do not need to insure your vehicle if it is kept off the road and declared as off the road ( SORN ). This rule is called 'continuous insurance enforcement'. (www.gov.uk)
If you don't want the current car to be uninsured until you sell it, then you'd have to insure both. Your current insurer might do that as a courtesy, but might not. Best bet is to get it up for sale asap, and if you get a buyer before your new car arrives, tell them they can't have it until that date. Most reasonable people would be understanding with that.0 -
When I move my insurance over to the new car, the new car will be being kept on the driveway as I'm sick of the kids playing out around my current car and getting mucky hands on it and footballs knocking into it. So the old car will have to be kept on the road but when people come and see it they'll want to test drive it, I can't do that without proper insurance can I
I've been off work for a week too I should have spent this week doing it >:( Best Wins:

Yes you need to keep it taxed, MOT'd and insured if you want to park it on the road.
See if your insurer will let you keep the old car on cover for a limited time after the changeover till you sell it
(Make sure any prospective buyers wanting a test drive prove to you they have insurance cover to drive it)0 -
I can't do anything until I find out a date from the dealership but for now I've cleaned it and taken photos and hopefully people understand that I can't sell until that date:dance: Best Wins:

If you cancel or swap the insurance over you need to take the car off the road and SORN it which will cancel the tax at the same time.
This will restrict buyers who have a policy that states the car must be insured for their driving other cars cover to apply.
Mine did state that the other vehicle must be insured for my cover to apply, this year it doesnt mention that.
Dont forget than when someone does test drive it whilst your insurance is valud they will only be covered 3rd party, if they crash it then you wont get paid out for your car.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
When I get a date (or at least when the car number plate can be searched!) I'll call insurance and see what they can do for me, hopefully it won't cost too much to keep them both insured for a little bit:dance: Best Wins:

You can establish now whether or not they will let you keep your old car on cover when you get the new one.
If they will, no problem.
If they won't and you are determined to keep the old car on the road then you need to research your options now for when you are ready.0 -
I didn't think they would since they can't even look it up on the DVLA and stuff:dance: Best Wins:
