Road tax exemption

Hi All, I believe I can claim Road tax exemption on my car due to the fact that my wife receives higher rate DLA. Is there any limit on mileage as my family are scattered about the country and visits can clock up the miles. We are both retired and the car is realy only used to take her were she needs to go.(ie) Doc's/ Hospital visits/ visit friends and family and days out .
Kind Regards Bob.

You can get exemption if the car is used primarily for your wife, there is no limit on the mileage if it's your own car. More info here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/MotoringAndTransport/Yourvehicleandlicence/DG_10028003
Have you looked into motability? That is something that could be affected if you did excessive mileage but worth a look if you are considering changing car in the future. Info here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/MotoringAndTransport/Yourvehicleandlicence/DG_100280000 -
Does your wife receive HR mobility or just HR care?
I have Free Road Tax and we have clocked up 14k miles this year. There is no mileage restrictions that I know of. I know if you have a mobilty car then restrictions are put on you.

If you have a Motability Car, you have a limit of 15,000 miles per year. At the end of the three year lease if you have done over 45,000 miles you have to pay 1p per mile excess.
If you get a Motability Car you can only use it when your wife is in the car or if you are going on an errand for your wife - an errand counts as getting her medication or shopping for her.0 -
to be able to get it you need to be on high rate mobility and at least middle rate care...as I wasn't allowed it until this happened...give the DLA a ring and they will be able to tell you if you can get it also they will send you the tax exempt certificate which you get off them they last for about 4 years I think and you take that with you when your taxing your car...hth's:D

You only have to be on HIGH RATE MOBILITY, care rate does not come into it. I had tax exemption when I was on High mobility rate and was on low care rate. If you do have tax exemption on the car it does mean that you can only use the car for your wife - if you don't and you got caught you would be in trouble.0 -
Hi Bob
Your wife only has to have high rate mobility component for you to be exempt from vehicle excise duty (road tax to me and you!!). The care component doesn't come into it at all. There is no mileage limit as far as the DWP are concerned. However it's been mentioned here that there is under the Motability scheme. I don't know about this as it's a priavate contract between you and the car company. I'm assuming it's your own car and not leased from one of the companies which deal with the Motability scheme?
By the way you can also reclaim all the road tax you've paid as long as it's complete months so get a move on with it as it usually takes a week or two to get your exemption through. You MIGHT just do it by the end of this month so you can reclaim next months tax back if you've paid it.
All the bumf should have come with the DLA decision.I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!0 -
You are limited to 15,000 miles a year if you lease a motability car, otherwise no mileage limit.
If you use your roat tax exemption then the car has to be used for the direct benefit of your wife.To claim exemption from vehicle tax, the vehicle must be registered in your name or registered in the name of someone you nominate to drive for you (a nominee).
However, the vehicle must only be used for your purposes, for example shopping or getting prescriptions.
If it is being used by the nominee or someone else for their own personal needs, then the exemption will be lost and the normal rate of vehicle tax must be paid.
