Acer Aspire E1 laptops - weak WiFi on one but not the other

My wife and I bought Acer E15 laptops recently. Hers won't connect to the WiFi when upstairs (the router is downstairs) but mine will. Both laptops are set up the same, running Windows 10. Any ideas what I could do to remedy this, or is it a hardware problem?
In power settings I set the wireless adapter to 'maximum performance' so it doesn't go to power saving mode.
In device manager I tried to upgrade the Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter driver software but it tells me I am running the latest software.
I have not yet tried changing the router channel as my laptop and the mobile phones are fine.
We also have a USB wireless device with an aerial and when plugged in that works fine, but she shouldn't have to use that just to use the laptop a few metres from the router!

faulty wifi card , faulty antennae , antennae wire not connected during manufacture/repair ,0

As it works well with the usb dongle and you have a direct comparison with another identical pc I would suspect a hardware fault.
Does it show signal strength anywhere. If theres a difference between the pc's or with the dongle this again suggests a hardware fault.
