2nd Santander 123 Acc & Direct Debits Question...

I have a Santander 123 account in my sole name with two monthly Direct Debits, Tesco Internet Saver and Tesco Instant Access Savings.

I'd like open another 123 account, either a joint one with my wife or a sole 123 account in her name.

Can I use the Tesco accounts mentioned above to set up additional Direct Debits on the a new 123 account to satisfy the 123 T&Cs regarding the need to have two DD's set up?

Many thanks!

Yes...if you open a joint account.
No...if she opens a sole account (however, some have reported success, but the T&Cs say you can't do it).
  • Don't you have any utility bills etc that qualify for the cash back?

    The T&Cs don't say can't do it. Although Tesco's don't like it.

I'm looking at the "Terms and Conditions, Your questions answered" booklet for my Tesco Internet Saver Account.

On page 1 (inside front cover), the following is written...
When you open your Account you must set up a Linked Account to move money in and out of your Internet Saver Account. Please note that you can set up more than one Linked Account.

A Linked Account is another account you have told us about and held in your own name with another bank in the UK.

Here are the T&Cs from the pre-application screen on their website...

You'll note they say exactly what I reproduced above, albeit this time on page 2. ;)

    Thanks for the replies!

Looks like if I want to use the existing DDs already set up on my sole named 123 account, it will have to be a joint account for my wife and and I that I need to open up with Santander.

    Thanks again for the assistance,

I regularly transfer money to savings accounts from current account but this is always by standing order not direct debit. Have never heard of direct debits being set up for this purpose.

Assuming that you can transfer the direct debits as you suggest, then what are you going to use to replace them with? Whatever new direct debits are to be set up on the original account to replace the transferred direct debits could just as easily be set up on the new account.

I think you've misunderstood what's being discussed here.

There are no "transferred direct debits". Some savings account providers allow deposits by DD, ie they pull the money in rather than you pushing it (by FP/SO/etc).

OP is looking to either add two more DDs on his existing Tesco accounts for the proposed joint Santander account, or for his partner to open two Tesco savings accounts to service the DD requirements for a Santander account in her own name.
