we have the following software on our computer: Comodo anti-virus and firewall (though it tells you every time you are connecting to a new page whether you want to allow things in and i cannot always tell whether they are nasties or not - so dont think it is the best) and AVG spyware. i think this is the only thing i have on it. i think i get some microsoft patches come up from time to time too. any ideas if that is sufficient is great and any advice on comodo if i do keep it too would be great. thanks in advance.

Assuming you are using xp, do you log in using an adminstrator account or a limited account? If you use the latter it will help minimise problems if something does get past the firewall.0

Although the Comodo firewall is well know and respected their antivirus is a new venture and it's only in beta stages. My guess is it may let malware through.
As to the pop-up asking you what to allow and what to block this is usual. Every firewall will ask. Especially if it's a new installation. The program need to be taught your personal rules of engagement. Over time the program will build up its own list of what you allow and what you don't. It's a learning process.
Furthermore, just having a software firewall + antivirus + "AVG *spyware" won't be enough.
*By the way I'm assuming you mean "AVG Anti Spyware".
IMO your should also have Spybot Search & Destroy (with resident "Tea Timer" protection enabled), SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, Windows Defender, SnoopFree [http://www.snoopfree.com/PrivacyShield.htm] and maybe others.

There is a little duplication/crossover but all these tutorials are well worth reading.
