I think you're being reasonable, and would do likewise.
They followed the letter, so did you

I repeat - until we know what the contract says, we don't know if the OP is following 'the letter'.0 -
Yes, come on, what is in the contract? Assuming there is a clause in there -which is quite standard in most template agreement - that the tenants would allow for viewings a month before moving with appropriate notice, then you could be seen as being in breach of your contract by refusing every requests for viewing without good reasons.
The landlord could make a claim that as a result of your breach of contract, they have incurred costs as a result that they want to deduct from the deposit. How they would evidence this, I don't know, but you never know.
Like others, I think your attitude is very poor. The landlord is not twisting the rules, they are applying the terms of the contract which is standard. It is YOUR FAULT that you didn't familiarise yourself with those rules. You are angry with them because they are doing things by the rules just because it doesn't suit you and you want them to pay for it.
Don't be surprised if they decide to the return of the deposit just to delay the whole process and you don't get your money back for some time. You know that it can take many months to go through moderation?0
