When is £5 Not £5?

  • I have the Jersey one, and the UK £5 and £20 ones are on their way. As mentioned before; the Jersey one has a big Bailiwick of Jersey stamped into it and is legal tender in Jersey.

The advert will be saying it's face value is £5 because it's not a proof or uncirculated coin so only costs teh face value of the coin. The UK £5 coin I have coming along with alot others I have, are sold uncirculated for normally around £13.

Most commenerative coins will never be used to pay for anything, so confusion from people who work in shops etc. is never going to arise. I'm certainly not going to try pay for things in shops with either of my £100 coins anytime soon.

Is this a big problem? I don't seem to find myself exactly inundated with worthless Jersey £5 coins.

  • I've used £5 coins to buy things, usually accepted, after all £5 is £5.

Recent replies were a bit more enlightening, thank you for your efforts, I did look up legal tender on wikipedia but I wasnt any more enlightened at the time, the explanations given here were much clearer. So now I understand however Im sure many others who read the "legal tender only in Jersey" would also be confused, it makes it sound like it wouldnt be accepted as cash in the UK at all but in fact it just means it could be declined at some places not that it isnt worth anything which is what I understood it to mean initially.

I realise the majority of people wouldnt use this coin and just keep it but its like those tokens you get for your trolley , tesco try to sell you one for a pound, I refuse to buy one because I know in a jam I can spend that pound if I really needed to and I feel the same about the £5 coins that it should still be worth the amount which it seems it would be at least at the bank. Thank you again

No way!!! Those fake £1-sized things for trolleys are sold for £1?! What a money-making scheme that must be!

"Hey, do you want to swap that tiny bit of metal that's worth £1 for an almost identical bit of metal that's worth nothing?!" Sure! That's worse than the "con" of gift vouchers!

A pound! I've seen them for sale for £4.99!
