And saves you from having to thicken the gravy as well.0 -
I also use either a handful of lentils or porridge oats to stretch mince a bit further,my late Mum did this during rationing in the 1940s-50s and I have always done the same.
I also used to grate carrots into it when my children were tiny and protested about the orangey slices in mince and tattiesMinced meat is very forgiving when it comes to hiding veg from 'picky' kids

Two of my favourite meals using pork mince are:
Spinach & Pork Orzotto http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/pearl_barley_with_21752
And:
Dirty Cajun Rice http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/dirty_rice/
A little mince goes a long way in either of these recipes0 -

I have always grated carrot into spag bol. This week's lasagne also had a couple of ounces of red lentils thrown in and no one noticed. It firmed up the sauce nicely for the stack.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

I've had comments when I didn't put red lentils into mince meals - that they didn't taste as good, not savoury enough. Just shows you
This thread reminds me how good slow cooker oxtail is and smoked ham shanks. Both cheap and really great meaty joints.0 -

All, Thank you so much.
Lots of cheap protein packed meals! I will absolutely get these into the recipe book and tried out. :j
I didnt know about porridge oats in mince, I particularly like the fact that it would thicken the sauce, I always end up letting it reduce for a long time to try and thicken it. I dont really go for lentils so much any more, I always end up with a trumpy tummy, never seem to get used to them as we're always told we will:rotfl: Beef mince is my go to for hot meals to take to work and microwave so youve made my lunches cheaper too.
Ive got my budget money for the saturday trip to the butchers so will get meal planning for at least 3 of these for next week.0 -

Thank you. Ive joined the Feb grocery challenge, I did see the big list of meal ideas, I shall take a deeper look now.:)0 -
I'm no good with recipes but I do work in a butchers and off the top of my head I think the following are the cheaper cuts of meat we do - I know a butchers is not practical for everyone but at least you can buy exact weight or exact money if you are on a budget. I'm not sure how it compares to a supermarket either but hopefully it will provide useful comparison if only to show you how much money you're all saving
Pork -
Mince £6.80 p/kg (£1.10 cheaper than beef mince)
Belly slices or a whole/part of belly £5.80 p/kg
Shoulder joint or leg joint £6.80 p/kg
Gammon - If you can get a hock or a slipper (hock with no bone), we sell ours for £2.50 each, you get enough meat off it for a weeks worth of sanwiches for one, plus a good stock for soups
Weight for weight sausages are cheaper than chipolatas as chipolata skins are more expensive
Beef -
Slow cook joint or brisket £7.95 p/kg
Shin off the bone (for stewing) £7.80 p/kg (which is cheaper than chuck or skirt if you need a braising or stewing steak)
Chicken -
Chicken fillets cost a fortune (£9 per kilo ) Whole chickens or even thighs are alot cheaper if you need a chicken hit!
Also some game can be really good value like rabbit (a whole one makes a good stew), or diced vension is comparable price wise to stewing steak for a change.
Offal is always cheap - I think 4 big slices of pigs liver comes in at about 80p, lamb is about a £1 per kilo more.
If people put some shrapnel in our charity tin we also give out lamb and beef bones dirt cheap if you need them for stock so its always worth askingAll that is gold does not glitter
