I am having some renovations carried out at home and the selected builder has sub-contracted some of the work.
The Sparky has provided all certificates as required for work carried out.
Heating Engineer - excuse my ignorance but was unaware they had to be CORGI registered when dealing with gas alterations. I only heard about the need to be CORGI registered until 80% of work carried out. Now having read the CORGI website I am aware I should receive a compliance manual and Certificate to confirm commissioning of new boiler.
If he is not registered with CORGI where do I stand legally?
Also if it transpires he is not CORGI registered can I get a registered CORGI member to decommision boiler and re-instate it.
I am disappointed the builder has possibly elected to use someone not CORGI registered but I suppose at the end of the day it is my fault
Thanks in advance for any help

Good morning: If the installer isn't CORGI the installation should be reported to CORGI asap as it could be unsafe and non-CORGis doing illegal gas work need to be prosecuted. You can check registration and qualifications with CORGI.
You can use the online facility and CORGI will advise you http://www.trustcorgi.com/complain/illegal/reportillegalwork.htmx
Unless individuals such as yourself report illegal gas work then the practice will continue.
If you haven't paid the builder in full then don't pay the balance until the situation is rectified.
It is extremely unfortunate that the gas safety message still isn't getting out thereIf you search this forum you will discover that the topic has been discussed many times.

Many thanks for your response - I wish had known about these forums before the work was carried out.
I have read with interest the various messages and it does concern me when reading the problem other people have encountered with non CORGI registered people
I have just sent an email to CORGI with various questions.
With regard to payment I have a slight problem in that builders still have about 40% of their work still to do which needs to be finished before mid September and I fear if I don't pay the engineer they will either not finish the work or do a botch job on purpose and leave me in the mire.
Anyway as previously said MANY THANKS for your time0 -
Another quick question -sorry
I am led to believe that a CORGI registered heating engineer will be inspecting the work carried out and then commissioning it if he is happy. Is this allowed or even ethical? If I am incorrect or this is not permissible then I will take my complaint to CORGi
I have made initial contact with CORGI and they have been excellent. I would recomend others contact them if worried0 -
Good morning: If you have established that the original installer i.e. the one subcontracted by your builder is not CORGI registered then the original installer is working illegally and his activitites should be reported to CORGI for further investigation/prosecution by the HSE. Unfortunately, it is all too common for a CORGI installer to sign off someone else's work http://www.trustcorgi.com/cowboys/HowCanYouHelp.htmx
My OH, Corgi Guy, would never sign off someone else's work as it would be his reputation, his ethics (and possibly his freedom!) on the line if it all goes wrong. The HSE has been prosecuting illegal gas installers as well as dodgy landlords (very recent threads on this very topic) http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=514851&highlight=landlord+boiler
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=514155&highlight=landlord+boiler
For info on prosecutions http://www.hse.gov.uk/prosecutions/case/case_list.asp?SN=F&EO=%3D&ST=C&SF=SIC&SV=45330+++++
IMHO report the cowboy to CORGI...do your part and prevent others from going through what you are.

Good morning: Have you found a resolution to your situation? Has CORGI taken any action?
Your contributions on this thread could help other MSErs in the future.
