Actual Broadband Speed

Options
My broadband provider (prodigynet through Resource Utilities) is supposedly 8Mbps.

I am interested to ascertain what actual speed I am getting.

I have used broadbandgenie, which says I am getting 3.5Mbps and the line is capable of delivering 6.5Mbps.

What, if anything, can I do to get the speed up closer to what I am paying for?

Many thanks!

You are paying for up to 8MB. They can't control your distance from the exchange, the quality of your line and whether you choose to use your Master Socket.

Many things can affect you actual broadband speed and nobody on upto 8Mb ADSL max gets 8Mb. If you really are on a large country estate, do you have an long overhead telephone line to the property? Have you tried removing the faceplate on the master socket and connecting to the test socket? This eliminates all extension wiring in the property which can slow down your speed. Try a few different speed testers at different times of the day. i.e. here

espresso i know we have discussed this topic at length before but this link really helped me.

from my experience though if you are connected to a socket which isnt the master then from a line speed of 6.5meg the best i would get would be 3.5 meg as well. from the mods i did or via the master socket then you might hit 5meg.
  • Many thanks to all posters.

If by master socket you mean the first socket into the house, then yes I am using that. I have a Dlink wireless modem/router, which shows a speed of 54Mbps (some chance!) on the icon on the bottom of the screen.

TBH I wondered, firstly if 3.5Mbps is a reasonable speed, and secondly if the broadbandgenie information was accurate/reliable.

I have been checking my BT broadband speeds over the past 2 months using www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk My max speed has been 6949 Kbps, min 534 Kbps and the average is 3279 Kbps. I am paying for UP TO 10MB and am 1/2 mile from the telephone exchange. Speeds vary at all different times of the day.

3.5 is a good speed but may not be a true indication of real life use. it depends on what you use it for. try downloading a large file from a global company who has a lot of bandwidth.

when I said the master socket I meant the socket behind the face plate of your main phone point. try plugging your router into that to see if there is an improvement.
  • I shall give it a try, thanks.

    >which shows a speed of 54Mbps (some chance

That is the max transfer speed of the router wirelessly, so if you had two computers in your house connected to it you would be able to transfer files between them as (theoretically) 54Mbps.

Have you checked the Router itself to see what speed it is connected at? You need to browse its IP address (it may be on the label on the bottom if you don't know it) and check the internet connection settings page. It should tell you there. Unless you can improve the line into the house you won't be able to do better than that speed.

I'm on upto 8meg and this is mine:

and I get around 700kb/sec on a decently provided download.

Oh and my ISP is actually fast.co.uk, who I assume use Netservices PLC's network. I also highly recommend fast.co.uk.
