Juddering on full lock

Tonight I was scared witless! Did a U turn in work car park and got a really bad juddering sound - I thought I had a puncture or worse.

When I got home and told OH, he immediately said "did you have the steering on full lock, if so that is the reason." Is he right and does this happen with most cars?

I have only had the car for about 8 weeks and it is just a year old.

    No not normal.

something to do with power steering, every car I have driven has done the juddering thing, just ease of the full lock a little and it will stop

Thank you so much, will definitely try and avoid full lock in future as it is too stressful:)

It may well be a combination of the characteristics of the power steering system plus it being on full lock, with steering stops that haven't ever been greased and adding to the experience. Worth a quick check and a couple of blobs of grease wouldn't go amiss.

    I wouldn't know what a steering stop is:o

As I said the car is just a year old and has only done 5,500 miles, so it shouldn't be playing up.

Could another factor be that it has got quite big wheels for a small car (VW Up / 15 inch wheels)?

Apart from the "don't try full lock again", there could be a specific cause.

The steering should have end stops to stop the tyres scraping against the inside of the wings on full lock. If somebody has fitted fatter tyres, then these may no longer be adjusted right. Scraping the tyres like that would no do them any good at all in the long run. Assuming the end stops haven't rusted solid, it should be easy enough for a mechanic to adjust them out a little.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

This happened to me two days ago after I had a service and Mot. I thought they must have left a spanner in the wheel the racket it made. It was the liner, it was ripped and they had clipped it back in place and the wheel was catching the ripped bit.
