I am very partial to a home made chip - using organic white potatoes fried in organic sun flower oil My granddaughter will not eat potatoes so I suggested chips made as above. My daughter in law said anything deep fried was out as being unhealthy. I dare not ask why.

So can someone here explain it to me? I assume it is to do with the potatoes being deep fried. Is all deep friend food presumed unhealthy these days, regardless of what it is and how it is cooked? Or is it the oil use? I could substitute olive oil if that is better for you.

(Ironically when out with her friends, chip shop fish and chips is one of my daughter in laws favorite foods. Just not around her kids.)

I was reading that some oils, including sunflower oil has toxins in it when tis heated.
You should use Rape Seed oil which doesn't

Hi I can only assume your dil feels the deep frying is unhealthy because the potato soaks up too much oil? Maybe she would agree to you making them but oven cooking them with just a spray of oil instead as that seems to be the norm now ;)
Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.
  • I agree that it's probably to do with the fat content. Have a search online for slimming world chips, their method gives healthier chips that still taste great.

The school she went to probably said so. She believed it and it has stuck.

Deep fried food in moderation is not unhealthy.

Olive oil is not good for frying as the oil is not suitable for high temperatures and the oil has a taste that affects the taste of the fried food.

    Peanut oil is great though.

  • Probably got more to do with the fact that homemade chips mean you buy fresh potatoes and oil, rather than giving a supermarket and major food manufacturer ten times as much money for some pitiful stick that tastes alternately raw and burned.

I use "fry lite" http://www.dairycrest.co.uk/our-brands/butter-spreads/frylight.aspx for home made chips - parpoil 9 minutes then wait for steam to dissipate then spray base of tray then spread chips and spray top of chips and cook 200c for 45 minutes giving a stir and respray after 25 minutes.

Nothing is unhealthy about any food, esp good homemade food that is kept in its proper proportion to the overall diet.

Could you give your poor DIL a break please. This is one of multiple threads carping about her.

And for what it's worth the grandchildren are a baby and older toddler from recollection and most parents don't feed children of this age deep fried rubbish whether homemade or shop bought. Turn your question around and explain what nutritional benefit chips will give children who eat only small quantities of food anyway.

Um everyone knows deep fried foods are unhealthy? But not so unhealthy kids should never have them, just if you're dieting cut them out. I'd say shes not wrong but maybe being over protective

What makes deep fried food unhealthy though? If a healthy oil is used what is the problem exactly? Many baked chips have just as much fat as deep fried.
