Found phone

I found a very nice phone on the bus and have no idea who it belongs to since it's now been shut off. Can I sell the phone if it was reported stolen.

No. If it's been reported stolen then you could be done for handling stolen goods and anyway if it's been blocked then it's useless.

    Just give it the police.

Why create a username just to ask this question? I'm sorry I've seen too many people today creating account and asking very basic questions.

Of course you can sell the phone. eBay, gumtree, paper, local pub.

However, you are not legally entitled to.

Out of interest, when did you find it? And why didn't you hand it to the bus driver?

  • No, it will have been reported lost/stolen and the IMEI number logged.

Can you find a charger for the phone, charge it up and wait for a call/see what missed calls the phone has recived? Can you give it to the Police?

How would you feel if you lost your phone and then discovered someone found it and thought 'Oh that's nice, I'm going to sell it'?

  • It's called stealing by finding.

If you sell it then you are handling stolen goods and that is what you will be charged with if you are found out. If you sell it you probably will be found out because it will be blocked. The person who buys it will probably report you to the police as a case of fraud since they wont be able to use the phone and when they contact the network they will tell them the phone has been reported stolen.

'Shut off' as in IMEI blocked? That doesn't prevent you from accessing the address book (unless it's PIN-locked) and looking up the number probably listed as 'Home'.

  • Property found on a bus is handled by the bus operator, not the police. That is where it should have gone.

Should have handed it to the driver/handed it into their office/told their office and handed it into the police.

What bizarre behaviour to simply trouser its shiny goodness.
