IceWM is a handy fallback login if things go titsup while testing KDE5 bleeding edge.

That is about the only reason I have it, among a few other lightweight session and window manager combinations for alternative logins.

I couldn't tell you how old it is, I've not really looked.

It appears to be XFCE3, which would be from 2003 or earlier. If you are being forced to that, no wonder you have a low opinion.

Once I had to actually use Linux (Fedora 17 or Ubuntu)

F17, that's a millennia ago in the Linux world.

Unfortunately, I'm guessing you've probably never worked in the industry of software development. When a development platform is first established, nobody usually changes from that point onwards unless the project necessitates it and depending on the length of the project, that means you could end up years behind by the end. There's an element of the 5 monkeys metaphor about it. I'm sure we could all upgrade to Fedora 21 and continue to build our work successfully, but the customer insisted that Fedora 17 was our platform and nobody is willing to change.

I've moved onto another sister project which now uses Ubuntu as the platform. Still junk though in my opinion. Has it's own set of typical Linux'y problems and pretty much grinds my gears when I use it.

Fedora isn't a commercial grade 'nix; it's the bleeding edge testbed for Redhat with a very short support window. Looks like they don't know what they're doing.

As for Ubuntu there isn't a lot wrong with it (thanks to Debian) apart from the terrible unity and no default home partition; much better off using Mint.

Ubuntu is full of stupid anti-features and poor design choices.

I notice that Dell have flip-flopped again on selling Home systems.

Not that I endorse Dell or that laptop in ANY way. I repeat, IN ANY WAY. Especially the Unity desktop it is bound to have.
