Poor Credit Rating

Hello MSE Forums!

I'm seeking some advice on behalf of a friend (she's at wits and and doesn't really know what to do).

Basically she recently tried applying for credit to purchase a car, bur she was declined. No explanation was given, but she didn't think anything to it. A few months later she was trying to apply for a credit card in an attempt to boost her credit score because she is wanting to apply for a mortgage in a few years and doesn't want to be rejected for any reason.

Her application wasn't accepted for the credit card, so she signed up with Experian to check her credit score where it turns out she was a "poor" credit rating.

On her credit report it had detailed that she has had six credit applications within the last six months and she has missed payments on one of these applications.

Here's the thing. It wasn't her who applied for this credit, it was her sister who had used my friend's name and now she has a bad credit score against her. She is understandably upset as this has affected her credit score through no fault of her own, but she's found herself in a difficult situation where she wants to clear credit score, but she doesn't want to throw her own sister under the bus, so to speak.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do now? Any help would be kindly appreciated.

  • She has two options -

Report it as fraud and have it investigated or removed.
Let it stay on her credit file.

She can't have it both ways. She either lives with it or reports it a fraud and drops her sister in it. He sister had little or no consideration for your friend when she started applying for credit in her name so I suggest that you friend be equally ruthless in resolving the issue.
