Electric debt

Options
About 7 years ago I managed to run up a debt with edf on my electricity and they moved me to prepayment and paid a fixed amount weekly to clear the debt. I was fine with this and got on with it.

Last month I decided to switch enery suppliers for a better deal and had a letter through from edf saying I couldn't switch as I still owed a large amount.

From what I can gather is that somewhere during the past few years they switched computer software and the debt didn't transfer over and hasn't been collected.

I can't believe i still owe most of it. What can I do?

Any help appreciated.

  • What debt is showing now on the meter ? Screen "S " will show what debt remains.Screen "T " shows the weekly repay amount. These screens can only be seen with key inserted.
  • That's the thing. No debt shows on the meter.

Bottom line, if you owe it you have to pay it.

Speak to EDF and ask for a good will payment you may get a small reduction. EDF switched computer systems mid 2010.

Your allowed to transfer up to a £500 debt on PPM, so if you can bring it down to that level you should be able to switch.

I think you need to try to establish for certain whether it is the debt which didn't transfer over, or whether it is the repayments which have been (very conveniently) lost.
