I had a mortgage with Northern Rock from 1999 to 2004, when I repaid it in full, happily before they sank without trace. I have had one of the claims companies insisting that even though NR is gone, if I opted out of PPI at the time it will have been hidden in the monthly repayments and I can now claim back THOUSANDS.....as Northern Rock no longer exist, how is this even possible? If there is any claim to be made, I will be doing it independently and not paying £495 up front by credit card as these guys are asking - but is it even possible and who would you claim from?

It cannot be hidden. That is a CMC myth.
Northern Rock retailed their insurances as standalone products with a monthly direct debit debit. Even where a lender has MPPI and its paid with the mortgage, it appears on the mortgage statements. If there is any claim to be made, I will be doing it independently and not paying £495
And that is the advance in advance fee fraud. Lie to you promising a payout that appeals to your greed and then hit with a smaller amount to pay as your greed blinds you to common sense. Although in your case, you havent fallen for it. If you ever watched Hustle on tv, you would know the format as most cons they did were variations of advance fee fraud.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
