Hi

I really need some help with my Electricity and Gas comparison I have completed using the Money Saving Expert Cheap Energy Club.

I am currently with EDF Energy on there Fixed Tariff until Mar 2016 paying by quarterly cash/cheque.

EDF Gas
unit rate - 3.587p
standing charge - 26.250p
combined cost per day 29.837p

EDF Electric
unit rate - 12.758p
standing charge - 18.900p
combined cost per day 31.658p

I have just done a comparison using the Cheap Energy Club and it has advised me I could be saving £51 a year/£4 a month on there
Fixed 1 Year Collective Sept 2015 Online for 1 year.

EON Gas
unit rate - 2.859p
standing charge - 31.500p
combined cost per day 34.359p

EON Electric
unit rate - 9.450p
standing charge - 26.019p
combined cost per day 35.469p

When I have checked the combined prices for both Electric and Gas I would actually be paying more on EON so I cant figure out how I would be saving over the year. I would like to stay with paying via quarterly cash/cheque.

Would anyone please be able to explain it easier for me as I am struggling to work it out.

Thanks

Your "cost per day" is your error, you have used the daily charge plus 1 kWh. It is your total kWh use per year that gives you the true figure. If you have correctly input them and selected the "what you're currently paying" option then the savings will be correct.
  • You do not add the 2 rates together. Put in your annual consumption in kwH and compare that way. I am assuming you have done this hence the saving. Do not foeget to also check EDF Energy's cheapest overall tariff as you may not currently be on their cheapest.

Your cost per day is wrong.

You need to know how many units of electricity you use per day and multiply this figure by your cost per unit THEN add the standing charge to get the correct cost per day of electricity.

For gas, you need to know how many cubic meters you use per day - multiply this figure by 11.15 (this is nearly correct, some suppliers use a slightly higher figure, others slightly less) then multiply the result by your unit cost then add your standing charge to find your daily cost.

Do this for each company - better still, do it for the year's consumption figures if you have them.

Nothing to do with suppliers but with the calorific value of the gas which varies by day and region and is provided by National Grid on a (usually twice) daily basis which is why 11.15 is an approximation. Over my past 15 bills the CV has been from 38.5 to 39.9 varying the conversion figure from 10.95 to 11.35.

Hmmm - The EDF tariff protects you against Price Rises till March 2016, which carries you through the whole of next winter
The Eon tariff expires in Sept this year and leaves you vulnerable to any price hikes before, or during next winter.

Not really sure what you are attempting to do here

Pop back when you have more time, at least more than 60 seconds. ;)

If you really are only using 1 kWh of gas and 1kWh of electricity per day, I would have thought someone like Ebico would have come out tops as a dual fuel supplier.
Also they charge the same no matter how you prefer to pay, so if payment by cash/cheque every quarter on receipt of bill is your thing (usually an expensive option with most suppliers) you'll pay no more with Ebico :)
