Specsavers contact lens trial charge

I completed a free lens trial with specsavers, and ordered daily disposables for £35 at the end of my trial. However when I asked if I could have a copy of my prescription they told me to receive this it would cost £20. I dont understand why they would charge for this when I paid for contact lenses with them already. Does anyone know if this is the right procedure?

That's when I ditched then and went to Asda. They will give you your prescription without even asking. They don't have to worry as their price are super competitive unlike Speccy who are desperate to keep you as they know you'll get a much better deal on the Internet (but need a prescription)
  • but I had already paid to get the lenses with them, and to take my prescription they told me to pay another £20 on top.

I'm pretty sure they're not legally allowed to charge you for a copy of your own prescription. NHS:
After the sight test the person who tested your eyes must give you a copy of your spectacle prescription (whether new or unchanged) or a statement saying that you did not need a prescription; this is a legal requirement.

What were the T&C's for this FREE trial?

the t&c's stated on the website as follows:
Trial subject to suitability and includes easyvision and Acuvue® lenses only. Excludes other brands, coloured, gas permeable or hard lenses. One free trial per person per year. Current prescription required. Alternatively, an eye test will be required at our standard charge.

I have sent a complaint email to specsavers online but they replied and and said that they have forwarded my response to my store to contact me about this.

Does anyone have anything i can show them as proof that I have the right to my prescription. The £20 charge for my prescription doesnt make sense to me as i completed their trial and purchased lenses. Surely it make more sense to charge me if i didnt choose to go through with their lenses
  • I had something similar with my local opticians. I misplaced my prescription information and when I asked them for another copy, they wanted to charge me. I think they knew I was looking to get glasses elsewhere and this was some sort of deterrent. Thankfully I found my original documents. I got two pairs of glasses online for £120 when they wanted to charge me nearly £200 for one pair.

Because even though you ordered with them this time, they believe you want your prescription to buy the next one from elsewhere. Why would you need it otherwise.

I have also read that it is a legal right to have your prescription, so they can't say no, but I expect there is nothing that say that you are entitled to have it free of charge and they are using this to get customers to stay with them.

    1. It has nothing to do with the NHS as the NHS does not pay for contact lens trials.
    2. If they have already given you a copy of the prescription they are entitled to charge for a copy.
    3. Look at the GOC regs they are required to issue a copy of the prescription when fitting is completed.
    4. In my opinion it would be hard to argue that fitting hasn't been completed if they were willing to sell you a months supply.

I think if you push hard enough they would have to give you a copy of the prescription you could complain to OCCS if you get no joy.

A lot of opticians will try and get out of giving you a copy of prescriptions makes no sense to me as they have generally already lost the custom.
  • Turns out the charge was part of their old policy, and the staff who tried to charge me was not notified of this. Manager emailed me my prescription free of charge.
  • I buy my lenses online, much cheaper, specsavers charged me £50 for 3 pairs (toric lenses), and i bought the same online for £30. When they came they were the same box, just without the specsavers label stuck on.
