New York City in February??

Hi

Can anyone advise what it is like to visit NYC as a family of 4 (children aged 5 & 10) in the month of February. We are limited as to when we can visit due to holiday restrictions with our work and the alternative is August when the cost is more than double.

We can handle the weather being cold but I would be interested to know if the weather is really bad whether attractions shut . We would probably wish to avoid being hotel bound.

Thanks

Last time we went in February it wasn't cold.......it was f'''''''''''g freezing.

Nothing was really closed because NewYorkers are used to it. Central Park carriage rides, helicopter rides, boat rides all running as normal.

It was great, but make sure you take plenty of layers.
  • Why would the cost be double? We go to new york several times a year and the cost is pretty much the same regardless. Scheduled flights and hotel. Now is a good time to book flights as BA and Virgin have sales on.

We went in Feb 14 and were incredibly lucky that the temperatures were around 10c. There was still snow lying in the street from the last bout of cold weather. Nothing seemed to be closed as a previous poster said, cold and snow is normal

I've done New York in January in blizzards and everything stayed open -as said it's "normal" for NYC,

That said end of August fares are substantially lower than July so that might be another option for you.

BA are offering £63 off long haul flights today to celebrate the Queens reign. Someone on the Flyertalk forums has found flights to NY for £206 (not sure on exact dates).

Anyway, we visited NY this year for New Year. The only real issue is the cold. In hindsight the open top bus ride was a stupid idea! And I'm not sure I'd want to be on the water, with the wind.
Other than that, crack on and enjoy!
  • I went to New York one February, and the weather went from being colder than I've ever experienced in this country to spring like temperatures in the space of a couple of days. Layers of clothing are best. I still have a photo and carrier bag from our visit to the Twin Towers, which I can't bring myself to look at after what happened.
