While looking on the DELL site I found the following Troubleshooting solution, more by accident than design. I had updated my BIOS recently due to another problem. I followed the steps below and bingo - sound again.
I wasn't aware that my Dimension 9150 had integrated audio. Will taking this action give cause any problems further down the line?

From DELL site:
Resetting the BIOS Defaults Can Cause a No Sound Issue
On a system with both integrated audio and an add-in Creative sound card, you may experience no sound from either the sound card's green Audio Out jack or the front headphone jack.
Both Dell 32-bit and Creative Sound Blaster diagnostics will pass. This occurs because the onboard audio and the Creative Soundblaster card conflict.
Disable Integrated Sound in BIOS
To disable integrated sound in the BIOS, perform the following steps:
Press the <F2> key while the system is booting to access the system BIOS.
Press the <Down Arrow> key until Onboard Devices is highlighted and press <Enter>.
Select Integrated Audio and press <Enter>.
Change Integrated Audio to Off.0
