I do feel bigoted and unkind for feeling the way I do, but I can't help wishing my son had one of the other staff who can do more as my child's key person.

You shouldn't feel bigoted and unkind if you really think this person isn't fit enough to do the job. Maybe the pre-school believe that they've made suitable adaptations (like other workers changing nappies etc.) for her disability but haven't got it quite right.

I'd raise it with the manager and be honest as you have been on here. Tell them what you've observed and explain that you want him to grow up to be understanding of disability but you don't want him to be disadvantaged by not being actively involved in play. Maybe then they'll observe the situation more closely and make further adaptations to routine. If not, then a couple of sessions of 'sedentary' play won't harm him unduly but you need to think for the future if he's going to increase his hours.

I think its a good thing that your son gets interaction with someone who is older and someone who is a wheelchair user. It will hopefully teach him not to be discriminatory when he grows up.

If you are concerned that he doesn't do enough active stuff or is at a disadvantage then mention it to the manager. Is the lady alone with the kids though? When my child was at nursery she had a key worker but was actually looked after by all the workers so in her case it would not have mattered.

The main thing is your child happy? Sometimes as adults we notice things that kids don't even realise!

OP, what qualifications does his alloacted carer have? What ofstes rating does the pre-school have?
I must say it is very unusual for a pre-school to allow children who are not toilet trained.

I agree this post sounds like a windup. But pre-school can start from the age of 2, not all kids are trained by then. My eldest was still in a pull up when she started pre-school at 2yr 5m.

Wind up or no wind up, everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt until proved otherwise! What is not helpful is almost every post stating wind up _pale_ if someone else encountered a similar problem and came across this thread, the helpful advise posted has been lost through all the negative posts.

You do not set a good impression of this forum or the good nature of most of the people on this forum by acting like this! What is even worse is, i'm 1 of the least serious people on this forum and i'm saying this

Do go and speak to the person in charge. Go in with a query such as "Jonny is really enjoying nursery, but could you explain how your system works please - as I have noticed Mrs X is his named person and I wondered how this works. I know she is very experienced but is she able to provide everything that Jonny needs? I am just a bit worried he may be missing out.

Any manager worth their job will not mind such a conversation. She has probably had it before.
Thank you and all the other people on the forum for the advice. It gave me the confidence to go and see the Manager. I approached it like you said. The Manager was very nice and explained that it was like others have said that in pre-school that they work as a team and even in small group work partner up staff, Apparently the key person has worked there for 30 years and is very popular with local families. The manager did apologize for not explaining how the pre-school staff work. She said the lady has cerebral palsy and usually explains to the children when she cannot help them and calls over other staff to help. She would not be in sole charge of my lively 2 year old.
  • I know this thread probably did sound like a wind up, but it was honestly something I was worried about and I didn't know how to deal with without causing offence to someone who seems a nice person. I was also aware that I could be considered a bigot and told to take my child out of the pre-school as another poster said. Thank you to all those who gave me the benefit of the doubt about this being a wind up and the excellent advice, which I used to put my mind at rest. .

Yes, this happens a lot on this forum. For some reason, there are some very suspicious people on this forum (it takes one to know one - so they probably lie a lot themselves) and instead of stopping reading when they think a post is a windup, they carry on reading and start telling everyone else that they don't believe the OP. They seem to feel superior to everyone else as if everyone else is too stupid to realise.

Fortunately, the OP was intelligent enough to ignore them.

Of course, there are threads that I don't believe, but I just stop reading them in case I am wrong as I don't want to upset the OP.

Stacey, I am glad that you were able to persevere with this thread, that you found it helpful, and came back to tell us so.

I also hope that the pre-school have realised that they could be more helpful in informing families about how they work.
