Time to clean mine out... for the first time.
I assume I will be able to find step-by-step instructions on the internet.
Is there anything I need to be particularly aware/careful of? Or is it a piece of cake? What's the most likely stupid thing I might do, that you can warn me about in advance so that it doesn't happen?
I don't generally do DIY.

1. Boiler off
2. Make sure the valves on each of the inlet and outlet pipes to the Magnaclean are closed.
3. Remove top, clean off per instructions (see above), replace, tighten top.
4. Make sure valves are open.
5. Boiler on0 -
I've just tried to clean my Magnaclean, but can't unscrew the top with the tool.

All I would add is
1) It's very very messy, it's easy to get the sludge all over the place so plan carefully how you are going to move the magnet from situ to where want to clean it
2) Magnaclean's own instructions say NOT to tighten the top with the spanner as it makes it very difficult to undo the top next time and can distort the seal in the lid0 -
For some reason I thought I had a Magnaclean! I had a Fernox TF1, which is more or less the same thing as a Magnaclean as far are as I can tell.
Anyway, after some perseverance, I managed to get my filter open. The water was very black, but I cleaned the fitler out a few times before reassembling it.0 -
