Canon IP4200 comptabile catridges

Options
Hi all,

I have this printer and have previously bought the official Canon cartridges, but am thinking of getting some compatibles instead to save some money. I have looked on Ebay and they all say you need to swap the chip from an original cartridge. Has anyone tried this and does it really work?

Also which compatibles should I go for? Is there much of a quality difference between them? I'm also half considering just buying a whole new printer so I don't have to worry about all this chip swapping stuff. I assume other brands of printer do not require this?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think that the other major brands introduced chipped cartridges before canon. I am on the verge of getting an ip4300 so I have been researching this as well and from what I gather it is quite a simple job to swap the chip(at least I hope it is)

You say that, but i have only yesterday tried swapping out the chip on the large black cartridge, and blowed if I can get the cartridge to be recognised!

Trouble is, I have a full set of the rest of them as well!

As an alternative get the Jet Tec Canon ink refill pack
It comes with a little drill & plastic plugs and is very easy to use just use black electrical tape to cover the ink hole whilst refilling
I have refilled my original Canon cartridges about 3 times so far
As long as you don't let the sponge dry out I think you can refill many times as it is just an ink container - the printhead is in the printer
You should note that the Canon ink level indicator will have to be turned off - but this would also be the case with compatable cartidges because the chip would register as empty
Just check the ink levels before a big print job

I have just bought two lots of unchipped cartridges for my Canon PIXMA (didn't realise they were - stupidly) and once I did realise, and read the instructions, despite careful removing of the chip and covering myself with ink (yeah I didn't read the, remove this first thing) I can confirm that my printer will not recognise the new cheap cartridges. This is probably the biggest con going, apart from when I bought the original printer and didn't realise the cartridges cost more than the printer.

I feel fairly stupid and £17 light

  • I have used compatables brought from a couple of sites on Ebay with no problem. Changing the chip over is easy.
Only problem is the printer keeps giving the message the ink is running low, but still keeps printing fine.
