Power 2 contact notice - but I have no debt!

Hi all,

New to the forum todayafter finding a notice from 'power 2 contact' on the doormat as I returned home from work.

The notice is printed, with some of the blank spaces only partially completed. Effectively, all it says is for (my address) to contact (name) at (number) within 24 hrs to "avoid any further action being taken".
I.e.mneither me, my flat mate, nor anyone else is identified as being the real reciever of this notice

However, my household is NOT in debt, and the notice does not state in any way what this relates to. There is a line stating "This relates to your account:___________" but it's left blank.

How do I best deal with this? Ignore? i'm not particularly keen on having some debt collectors show up at my door again though.,
I am considering calling the number anonymously and try and sort the issue (i.e. Any debt mus be reelating to previous tenant (but I've lived here for 1 year now)), would this be a bad move?

Any advice gratefully recieved!

Yes, ignore. Calling would be a bad move.

You can call the number anonymously but if you remain anonymous, you will not sort anything out. They will not reveal who it is for until you say who you are . Once you say who you are, they debt will probably have your name on it.

Don't worry about debt collectors [as distinct from bailiffs] turning up at the door, they have no authority. The card through the door is designed to spook you into ringing them anonymously and revealing your name so they can pin the debt to you.

The general rule is wait for the debt collector to reveal whose debt it is, for how much and to whom originally, before doing anything about it.

Good advice above, DCA's use all kinds of methods to get you to call them, it's like psychological warfare, leaving a cryptic, half completed message, it's human nature to want to find out more, you must never ring them, under any circumstances, they can say anything on the phone, that they would never put to pen and paper.

Unless you get something in writing, addressed to you, then ignore it completely, as you said, it was more than likely meant for a previous tennent, so not your problem anyway, debt is not transferable, and there is no such thing as a "black listed address", so no worries on that score.

  • Thanks both for your replies! I'll promptly bin the notice, possibly after a call to the FCA which they claim to be regulad by!

Any idea if they tend to be quite persistent about these false claims, or are they just laying out "phising trails"?
Absolutely disgusting behaviour, prying on people in poor financial health!

Will inform my housemate to not ring them, and, if someone comes knocking, check the identity before opening the door. (We mostly have charity fundraisers coming round normally anyway)

    do you owe utility debt
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Irrelevant. Please do not make such comments.

What you are doing with that comment - and should not be doing - is playing the debt collector's game for them and seeding unnecessary doubt in OP's mind

It is not OP's job to go racking their brains as to what this is about. If a DCA wants to chase someone for a debt, then they must do it on the level. They must correspond with the person they allege is in debt, they must declare an amount, the creditor and an account reference. Anything less than that is fishing and harassment.
  • Dont owe a penny - everything is on DD. Besides, I'd have hoped that any firm would send ME a bill directly first, and not just directly resort to a DCA for £30outstanding or whatever.
Nah, seems shifty, and as DandelionPatrol says, like fishing.

  • They also work for RBS group.

If bothered, write to them with a complaint that you don't owe anything and tell them to go away. See what comes back.

It is one thing to state that P2C work for utilities. It is another to ask OP if they have utility debt - in the latter case, you are just adding to the stress of what is both on the face of it and in all probability a fishing trip by the DCA.
