Buying - Is it worth registering with estate agents?

We're not under time pressure to move.

I popped into a local estate agent out of curiosity or a valuation and see what there was in our price range. In the days following, I got calls from 4 of their other branches asking if I was interested in their area as well. Is this a new thing?

Is a daily check of rightmove sufficient, or is there significant gain in registering with agents? I can't be doing with signing up to multiple agents, and then having all their other branches start contacting me as well.

We send our property details to people on our mailing list a couple of days before they go on Rightmove. More often than not it gets snapped up in those couple of days.

i'm registered with half a dozen agents in my search area. only two send me details before they hit RightMove. haven't yet had an answer as to why i don't get the details from the other 4. i thought that was the whole point of being on their list

Likewise. Not every vendor wants a board/press advertising/Rightmove.

We go to our mailing list first, and if it's good then it'll go, only after that will it go on the portals.

All depends how active the local market is.
  • It won't hurt you to register, but be prepared to be pestered about the properties they can't manage to sell.

Local agents here (South East) never bothered sending me details about properties early, I always called them first - the minute I saw details on rightmove (and I mean the minute!). It just save me time when booking a viewing, as I was already in their system (even if at a much lower price range :D)

Depends on the area. Here in Cambridge where it's very busy, everything goes on rightmove as they like to test the market fully for a week or so, usually two weekends, then decide which offer to go for. There aren't many agents that email them out before they get on rightmove but there are some. It would be a very poor agent who advised a vendor here to accept an offer before it had been advertised properly.

I'm registered with 5 local EA's but rarely get updates from any of them apart from one... and that one is only because I know the girl who works there!
  • When I was looking, houses weren't readily available for viewing so they had open days for viewing where about 60 million people would also be there so the agent contacting me before it got onto right move made no difference. I did find that when agents that contacted me about properties immediately, the vendor either wanted a quick sale or the property was horrible!

I registered with 6 local ones. Only one sends updates. Despite asking several times the others to be on their lists and they assure me I am and will hear of certain properties before rightmove...... I don't

I have given up and use rightmove. No idea why a majority can't do the simplistic of things and add me to a mailing list.

Oh and one of the agents has called several times to see if I am still looking, despite never telling me about any properties.

    Very bizarre.

When we sold, we had six viewings before the advert went up on rightmove. one of the six bought it. Additional traffic from rightmove was disappointing.
