Free Wifi on Train - Cheap VPNs?

Options
Our local train network has now got free wifi on the trains. Which is great for the commute.

However, i have worries about privacy/hacking with free wifi zones.

Can anyone recommend a cheap yearly VPN or even a free option?

The wi-fi zones on trains tend to be secure so you should be OK but should doesn't mean 100% secure so I would just not do anything such as banking whilst online on the train. Just stick to normal web browsing and playing games. Even if you did find a VPN provider you could get someone shoulder surfing to get your passwords from you as you enter them into your computer defeating the point of the VPN. It's rare but possible and in my opinion just as rare as someone seeing what you transmit over the wi-fi network.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Ooh -- don't talk about security on this forum! If you don't use the password "password" people tend to think you wear a tin-foil hat!

Why not set up a VPN server on one of your home PCs. The only downside is that you'll have to leave it (or find a way to remotely power it up) when you want to use it.

I use Avast Secureline VPN. For mobile devices it is £1.99 per month or £14.99 per year. I use it on Android but I would imagine it is available on IOS.

I seem to recall it offered a free trial.
  • Perhaps I'm being over cautious, maybe its fine to check email/login into sites that use SSL over public wifi? Millions of people do daily.

Just read lots of stuff on the web that advises the use of VPN on public wifi.
  • You may find the on-train systems block VPN

You'll be fine with standard SSL sites on public wifi.
