Thomas cook no show

So in those circumstances you should have contacted Thomas Cook and have this seat assigned to your MIL as a "second seat" (if they would allow that).
Then when she checked in this second seat would be also checked in an not available for resale due to a no show.
Unfortunately as you did not do that the passenger who seat this was, was deemed as a "no show" and Thomas Cook can resell if needed.
Lesson learned I'm afraid.
As others have said contact Thomas Cook for the refund for the reserved seating you never got because of the airplane change.0
