O/S Daily Friday 4th September 2015

OS Daily Thread Monday 31st August This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

    Morning everyone.

I've been lying awake for about an hour hoping for more sleep but it's just not there.

Yesterday I did screw up courage and tackled the car jet wash and so my car is now gleaming. There was a new machine with very clear instructions, all colour coded and easy to use. The broom bit made a lot of soapy foam. Now I have to clean inside the car, probably today or tomorrow.

My planted dried peas are sprouting already so it's time to plant another lot. I'm using empty tomato trays, just the plastic ones, so they're not too big.

Last night the farmer warned me about cow TB testing going on today. That'll mean a lot of indignant bellowing and moving of cows around. I need to go out for an hour or so and will stick the car in the barn out of the way when I get back.

I've got my usual porridge for breakfast and some soup with toasted cheese for later.

    Happy Friday everyone.
  • Good morning all! May I join you.....
I've got the chimney sweep coming this morning - and not before time! It's getting chilly in the evenings but not cold enough to put the heating on.
We have acquired a new addition to our menagerie - DD is a trainee vet nurse and her surgery had a tiny, lost wabbit brought in yesterday. Guess who has given it a lovely warm home.... I don't know how I got talked into keeping it but he is very cute.
Need to go pick the last of the tomatoes this morning. Will probably roast them in the oven with HG garlic and basil then squish them through the mouli to make tomato sauce. The house is going to smell wonderful!
Two loads of washing to go on as well. That should keep me busy today!
    Happy Friday everyone x

    Good morning everyone :hello:

It's a bright and sunny morning here but hubby wore his knitted beanie to go and wait for his bus as it's a bit chilly. Autumn is definitely here with the leaves turning and the evenings getting darker.

My grandchildren started school today, it was the 4 year old's first full day but he coped really well and he absolutely loved his first school meal. I expect he and his sister will be popping over this evening to tell me all about their days which will be lovely.

The girls' shoes finally turned up so they are all kitted out ready for school apart from DD12's school coat. I will have another look online but I think I am going to have to go into town and see if I can get her one seeing as she is the only one of my daughters who actually wears a coat when it rains.

I have a couple of manky bananas to use up so I am going to make a banana and honey cake. While the oven is on I will also make a jamaican ginger cake too as it's my hubby's favourite. I'm not sure about tea yet, I may make a chilli as we have some leftover tortillas which I can make into bowls to serve it in. I think I am having fish if I can get the courage up to fillet it and cut off their heads and tails. I tried many years ago and I was almost sick but in the spirit of trying things which scare me, I bought some whole cornish sardines to have a go again.

The following bit is about Christmas, please feel free to skip past it as I know it's only September :D:D:D.

As it's September I have started my Christmas book for this year. It's where I write down ideas for decorations and presents and food. I have decided to concentrate on the 'spending time on the family instead of money' aspect as I usually buy loads and loads of gifts for the girls and honestly, we can't afford it this year. So there will be lots of crafting and baking, playing silly games and just enjoying being with each other. I have discussed it with the family and they are all very keen so hopefully it will be a memorable Christmas.

My diet is going well apart from falling headfirst into some toast this morning. I have no excuses, I just wanted some. I'm not that bothered though and will be low carbing for the rest of the day. If I get time I will be making some cauliflower cheese soup as well as I want to fill up my freezer drawer with all different soups and I'm not labelling them so it will be a surprise every day :).

Anyway, that's all from me for now, hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xxx
  • Good morning all - newbie here. Great to be see so many like minded people :) Been busy so far this morning putting tea towels on the airer in the conservatory and towels will be pegged out shortly. Breakfast pots washed dried and put away.

Later this morning I will be making blackberry and apple crumble with the blackberries hubby picked yesterday and a cauli cheese with the cauli I bought from Aldi. He also bought me two cabbages from his friend's allotment which I will blanch and freeze. I will also be making a carrot cake with some of the carrots left in the bottom of the fridge.
  • Morning, ((((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))) if you need one.

Up and at 'em this morning, its inspection day, DD2 visiting to make sure we are behaving ourselves. Only kidding, she comes about once a fortnight now we have moved to the country and she is working during the day rather than at night. She told me last week her old boss went into the opticians and begged her to go back, no way, they did not appreciate her whilst she was there and the signs are they would do the same again, apart from which she is getting more money and free glasses!!

We are going into town later to the library and Morrisons so will give her a lift home.

Its sunny but quite cool, had another go with the fire last night definitely need to get the coal savers, otherwise we will be using a lot of coal.

Fish and wedges tonight, I made a rhubarb sponge last night which will do tonight as well.

Right off to fling the duster round before DD2 arrives.
  • Morning all and two new faces today. Welcome LILLIBET and WHITE-SAGE., nice to meet you.

Change of plan yesterday with the 3 DGDs. Eldest stayed at her dads last night as he wanted to take her to school on her face day at "big school". I've just had a photo of her WhatsApped, resplendent in her new uniform. She looks so grown up and the blazer looks as if it will fit her for a few years yet!! We have the other two here (5 & almost 7) all day as they don't go back to school until Monday.

Not a good day for Mr TA today but fortunately the girls are behaving themselves and leaving him in peace. At the moment at least.

Have a good day all. No plans here as the girls are here until DD finishes work. (((((((HUGS))))) if needed and take care xx

    TA

I hope your husband feels a bit better as the day goes on.

A van came yesterday for DD's bedroom furniture and it has now all gone except for a chair which will be picked up later. Once the room is cleared I plan to shampoo the carpet and paint a feature wall.

Going to a certain store beginning with I this weekend and getting kitchen stuff for youngest so will be busy.

DD phoned me to say she had made up her bed and it looked nice :j Older dd has had a job interview yesterday, another in a fortnight and two or three different places that seem interested in her. Can't wait for her to be in a new job she likes and one that really appreciates all she does.

Will try to pop down to the local butcher this morning as I have no idea if it is just the two of us tonight or if any of the family will pop in.

Meeting a DD in York around lunchtime and treating her to the cinema so need to get myself in gear. Have been sewing more bunting with youngest and discussing making a couple of patchwork cushions with her.

    Hugs to all

    Hi everyone,

Late start for me as I couldn't get to sleep. This was as a result of some very strange things that happened yesterday. It started when I opened my purse and found it empty when I knew I'd had at least £40 in notes and over £2 in change the day before. I rang DH and asked him if he'd taken it but he said no - could it have fallen out. The receipts behind the notes were still in there and the change in a different section so no. He then rang at lunchtime to say that he'd opened his wallet and the £60 in notes in it were also missing. None of our cards are missing and nothing else from the house although my new laptop and my phone were in the same room as the purse.

So we are left wondering, and trying to convince ourselves we must have spent the money and not remembered, although I got the change in the last place I visited on Tuesday, went straight home and didn't go out again. The alternative is just too incredible - that someone broke in without leaving a trace and just targeted our cash.

Anyway, sorry for boring on, I finished the table runners yesterday and also did two tables worth of tile candle holders. Will try to finish those today.

    Have a good day.

    Morning all,

Welcome to our newbies LILLIBET and WHITE-SAGE. Good to have you onboard, we look forwards to hearing more about you and your life in your posts to come.

I could sleep the clock round today. One of the dogs got me up twice in the night as she'd got an icky tummy and i was also shattered from entertaining my Grandson all day yesterday.

Had a long conversation with my eldest daughter last night. If you remember she has had to come back to the UK to sort out her South African visa. A fund raiser has been set up in Taunton on Friday the 11th. The baby house is struggling at the moment as her partner is not well and volunteers are being drafted in. The sooner my daughter can get back to South Africa the better.

A bit closer to home, there is a possibility both my husband and son will be working out of town for the next 18 months. I know i love my own company but i'm not sure i love it that much.

Oh and ive had a hack at my hair and all i can say is that it had better grow quick. :rotfl: Why oh why do the sides not grow as fast as the back? I'm trying to get it all one length but its taking forever to grow the layers out.

Back to my lovely Auntie who has died. She has left years and years worth of diaries.... My 'cousin' has been going through them and lets say he is no longer sure who his Father is. His parentage had been in doubt in my Mom and Dads mind for years. What a legacy to have left your son! Auntie is still in the mortuary, she died on the 15th of last month and the death certificate still hasnt been signed and the funeral can only be provisionally booked. I'm wondering if i ought to tell my Mom. Thats if the gossips havent told her already through reading my Facebook timeline. She understands everything i tell her but she cant talk to me back to tell me how she feels or what she thinks. Now she would love to know that what she had thought for years is appearing to be true but on the other hand... her best and longest friend has died.

Beds stripped and being laundered. I'm just going with the flow.

    Onwards and forwards

    have a great day all.
