Damaged kitchen worktop

My daughter starts her primary school on Monday and my other half been busy putting all those lovely little iron on name tags in all her school uniform. Unfortunately she did half of them upstairs when kids asleep on ironing board and the other half the next day on kitchen worktop with a tea towel on the worktop clothes on top of this. All well and good but what she has done is discoloured a very new worktop. It's a dark black speckled effect worktop the usuall type everyone has. Thing is we rent and moved in few months back after whole house had been completely refurbished including new kitchen. The worktop now has a huge oval light patch. Can't really tell what it had done but any one with any thoughts or ideas what I could try to bring the colour back? It's not melted but just pale in this patch. Iron was on wool setting so low heat. Tried Polish toothpaste car Polish as found from Google. It's almost like it wants some lacquer on it

An I the only one thinking - your kids sleep on the ironing board?

Now maybe someone will come along with a useful suggestion. :D
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

There wont be any DIY solutions. You need to google 'laminate worktop repairers'. There are companies that specialise in repairing worktops and other surfaces. However it wont ge a cheap option.

If it is not repairable, you will be charged for a worktop change.

it won't be a permanent fix but have you tried WD40 on it? Sounds crazy I know but its often used to polish stainless steel and I have used it in the past to mask scratches on plastics / buff up old style car bumpers.

I believe it's non-toxic so ok on the worktop - although I wouldn't suggest licking it!

  • Didn't mean to make that sound like it did. Grammar was never my strongest point but we bristolians do's it different lol.

I am aware yes I will be responsible for cost of repair. Was planning on staying here longterm just hoped might be able to make it look better for ourselves. The worktop is from Howdens but I believe they only sell to trade. And also the cooked hob is cut into this one.

Had a mobile guy repair one at last house, was damaged by a company replacing kitchen ceiling after a toilette leaked. The repair in my opinion was good looking but didn't last and had worn off after 6 months. My concern is the effected area now doesn't seem to have any protection as if water gets on it or a cup of coffee placed on it we end up with a cup ring or water mark but this does go after a short while. That's what makes me believe the laminate surface is now missing some kind of barrier protection.

To cover up, if the area is small enough, you could use one of the toughened glass worktop savers. They cost only a few £s and I always have two in my kitchen.

These Tesco ones are expensive (I've seen them reduced to £3 in Dunelm Mill )but give an idea of the range available.

When I used those iron-on name tags, one thing I noticed was that you have to hold the iron in one position for a length of time to get the glue hot enough to melt - much longer than you would do normally if you were ironing clothes. If you think that you aren't supposed to put hot pans from the cooker directly on the surface, what she did probably heated up the worktop more than that, and over an extended period of time while she worked though the clothes.

Sorry, I haven't got any advice apart from covering it up!
