Can't access Windows Works files

Options
The computer won't let me access my files or use Works. I've tried reinstalling Works but nothing seems to work. The link needed seems to have got corrupted. I've tried a Registry Cleaner but even though it repaired a number of faults I still can't open my files. I don't want to have to reinstall the whole XP but it looks like I might have to. Any ideas? icon9.gif

Have a look at this MS KB article - Error message: The Works Task Launcher cannot access the task you selected & work through the suggested solutions. G
• I read it but don't really understand it. My computer says wkswp.exe-Entry Point Not Found THe procedure entry point ?CbFromWzblStrings@@SAHPBG@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library WkWbl.dll.
I dont know which part of procedure on the site applies to me and does a clean boot mean take off all microsoft software and reinstall? I have Windows XP and it is just over a year old.

Thanks for posting the exact error message - it helps a lot.

Try an uninstall-reinstall first, but follow this clean-up utility method before reinstalling. Follow the steps exactly & in order as mentioned in the link.

If the above doesn't work, try the steps here: Works does not start when you double-click a works document

If still no joy: You receive a "WKWPAC.DLL" error message when try to use the Word Processor module in Works - Substitute WKWPAC.dll with Wkwbl.dll, if you need to attempt Method 2. To download Wkwbl.dll if required click here. G
• Thanks I'll give it a try and let you know what happens.

Try downloading OpenOffice.

It's free.

Yep, & much better too. G
• Downloading another office software won't help me access my lost files. In any case the software came with the computer. I didn't choose to have it. I now have the cleanest computer but still can't get in.

It sounds like the problem is with your Works package, so another application should read your files, as they are not really lost.

Bit dismissive if you haven't tried. I've found open office pretty good at opening (even corrupted) MS files when MS Office apps refuse to open them. And just because something came with your pc it doesn't mean you have to use it (or for that matter keep it installed). No matter what the debate of MS Office vs Open Office. Nobody would argue that Open Office is far far superior to MS Works.

What happened when you tried the suggestions in post #4?
