No refund for taking a car off our RAC Breakdown cover... Does that sound right?

Hi all

We have RAC breakdown cover for the two cars we own. It is due to expire 01/03/16.

We have just gone down to one car and have no immediate plans to get another. So I thought - "Bonus - I can reclaim some money from my RAC".

I've just called them and been told that this is not the case. The only time money can be reclaimed is if it is within the 14 day cooling off period. I asked what would happen if I cancelled the policy altogether. Again, I was told that I would not be due any refund.

I was very surprised by this and thought I'd check in here to make sure that the info is correct, and/or if anything can be done about it.

Many thanks

Max

Read the terms and conditions you signed up to when you took the cover out, they will details any cancellation/refund policy. Nobody on the internets can say for sure without seeing the T&Cs.
  • This happened to me once, they allowed me to suspend my personal RAC cover and then resume it a few years later.

I've just had to switch breakdown cover away from RAC purely because they do not allow partial refunds if you sell a car, even if you are only a month into a 12 month policy! I'm planning on selling my car soon and have moved to green flag who allow you to cancel at any time and only pay a £10 admin fee rather than have to pay for the full remainder of the year.

You have to remember that the AA and RAC are owned by venture capitalists these days. Long gone are the days when they were clubs owned and run by motoring enthusiasts who did their best for fellow members. If they can make money off you, they will. The good news is that there is plenty of competition out there and some really good deals available from other breakdown services.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Cover yourself with them rather than the vehicle
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
